The Rays expanded their lead to 3-1 in the sixth on a controversial home run by Matt Joyce. The umpires ruled it a double. Orioles manager Buck Showalter thought the ball was foul. Tillman through three innings, and more pregame notes (O's down 2-1)

Chris Tillman retired the first eight Tampa Bay Rays this afternoon before walking No. 9 hitter Yunel Escobar. You can guess what happened next. Desmond Jennings ran the count full and doubled to left, giving the Rays a 1-0 lead at Camden Yards. Tillman retired the side in order in the top of the first, getting a fly ball, pop-up and grounder. The first two batters, Jennings and Matt Joyce, each worked him for seven pitches. He breezed through the second before issuing the free ... read more

Orioles turning to Tillman

Orioles starters have gone more than five innings only once in the last seven games. That starter is on the mound today. Chris Tillman held the Padres to one run over seven innings Tuesday night, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out seven. The Orioles lost 3-2 when Jim Johnson blew the save - the beginning of a four-game losing streak that they will try to stamp out this afternoon. Tillman has to play the role of stopper today. He's registered five straight quality ... read more

Showalter speaks after 3-2 loss

It's not often that manager Buck Showalter sits in the dugout and watches closer Jim Johnson blow a save. Johnson hadn't squandered a lead in the regular season since last July, but the Padres scored twice against him tonight to win 3-2. "They hit some balls hard," Showalter said. "The first ground ball would be about the only one. ... Big double play ball on a ball hit hard and we had a chance to get out of it. You've got to tip your hat ... read more

Hardy extends hitting streak (Tillman update)

Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy extended his hitting streak to 10 games tonight with a single leading off the bottom of the fifth inning. Hardy, who grounded out in his first at-bat, is 13-for-37 (.351) with three homers, seven RBIs and five runs scored during the streak. It's been a slow climb, but Hardy's average is up to .228. Hardy was doubled off first base on Ryan Flaherty's scorching line drive to Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso, who made the leaping catch and stepped on the ... read more

Orioles prepare for Padres and roster moves

The Orioles are back home tonight after playing 14 of their past 17 games on the road, and they're facing an opponent that doesn't normally make the trip to Baltimore. The San Diego Padres have been to Camden Yards once before, and you have to go back to 2002, when the Orioles took two of three games. Melvin Mora had five RBIs in the series opener. The following night, Tony Bautista hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning. The Orioles won two of ... read more

Showalter speaks after 5-3 win

Orioles manager Buck Showalter spoke to second baseman Brian Roberts for about 20 minutes today, going over the upcoming hamstring surgery and looking ahead to his eventual return to the lineup. "He's very frustrated by it, as we are, but Brian Roberts is going to come back and make a contribution to this club this year," Showalter said. "I've got a good feeling about that." Roberts will undergo surgery Thursday in Dallas to repair a muscle in his hamstring. His recovery time is an estimated ... read more

Tillman the king at his homecoming (O's win 5-1)

If the sixth inning doesn't jump up and bite Chris Tillman - it tends to happen to Orioles starters - he's headed toward an outstanding start in his first game in Anaheim. Tillman's having quite a time at his homecoming. He's retired 11 batters in a row and holding tightly to a 2-0 lead over the Angels. Joe Blanton had allowed only one run until the sixth. Insane. But Adam Jones singled with one out and scored on Chris Davis' double - his 29th RBI ... read more

Tillman vs. Blanton tonight

Chris Tillman is making his second career start tonight against the Los Angeles Angels, and his first in their home ballpark. Considering that he's an Anaheim native, this is a pretty big deal. He may have to beg teammates for their spare tickets. Tillman owns a victory against the Angels. He allowed three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings on Aug. 14, 2009. That's it. One start, one win. Tillman has only faced three current Angels. Josh Hamilton is 0-for-6 with three strikeouts against him, ... read more

Teagarden leaves game with injury (O's win 7-3)

Orioles backup catcher Taylor Teagarden exited today's game in the bottom of the sixth inning after taking a foul tip off his left thumb. Teagarden removed his mitt and immediately headed to the dugout. There was no hesitation. The thumb obviously isn't exposed, but the foul ball from Josh Donaldson still created an injury situation. Donaldson has been a pest today. Two RBIs, one injured catcher. Teagarden's departure is complicated by Matt Wieters serving as the designated hitter today. Nice timing, right? Wieters is now ... read more

Orioles pitchers taking too many walks on the wild side (Britton in Oakland)

Zach Britton is still listed as tonight's starter for Triple-A Norfolk. If he isn't a late scratch, he won't be starting for the Orioles on Monday. Update: Zach Clark (UMBC) is now listed as Norfolk's starter tonight instead of Britton. Feel free to speculate. The assumption here is that Britton will be in the Orioles' bullpen the next few nights and will start Monday if he isn't used in relief for an extended stretch. Update II: Britton is definitely in Oakland and he will take ... read more

Showalter speaks after 2-1 win

Orioles manager Buck Showalter didn't wait for reporters to fire off questions tonight before commenting on pitcher Chris Tillman, who held the Toronto Blue Jays to one run over 6 2/3 innings. "Tillman was good, huh?" Showalter said after the Orioles' 2-1 victory at Camden Yards. "That was an impressive outing. To have that kind of command of the curveball and off-speed pitches on a night where the feeling in your fingers, ball's slick. That was pretty impressive. I'm proud of him. "He established command ... read more

Orioles still waiting for a starter to complete seven innings (O's win 2-1)

We're tied tonight and Chris Tillman won't get a decision. It sure looked like he was barreling toward a win. Tillman allowed three of his four hits in the seventh inning, and Colby Rasmus' two-out single with the count full scored Edwin Encarnacion and erased the Orioles' 1-0 lead. Darren O'Day replaced Tillman and walked Brett Lawrie to load the bases again. Emilio Bonifacio struck out to keep the game tied. The Orioles still don't have a starter who's gone seven innings this season. Tillman ... read more

Game update and more from Showalter (O's lead 1-0)

Chris Tillman retired the first four Toronto Blue Jays tonight, gave up a single a walk, and induced a double play grounder from Colby Rasmus. The third inning was a breeze - and trust me, it's breezy tonight. And bitter cold. Tillman retired the Blue Jayas in order on two fly balls and a pop up. He's thrown 35 pitches, 22 for strikes. Tillman has gone 3 2/3, 5 1/3 and five innings in his first three starts. Alex Burnett is the long man tonight ... read more

Showalter speaks after 6-2 loss

The Orioles' No. 6 through No. 9 hitters in the lineup went 1-for-14 last night and 1-for-14 tonight. There's good consistency and bad consistency. There's also the postgame media session with manager Buck Showalter, who addressed his starters going five innings in back-to-back outings. "The off day and some of the good starts, we were in a position the last two days to cover it," Showalter said following tonight's 6-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. "Mac (T.J. McFarland) gave us some good things. So ... read more

McFarland allows first run (O's lose 6-2)

It hasn't been a good night for the Orioles and we still have three more innings to play. Or should I say, but we still have three more innings to play? Depends whether that glass is half full or empty. Chris Tillman became the latest Orioles starter to exit in the middle innings, lasting only five and departing with the Rays leading 4-2. Rule 5 pick T.J. McFarland replaced him and gave up his first major league run in the sixth inning on a walk ... read more

Another slow start for Orioles (Rays lead 4-2, Tillman done)

The Orioles hadn't allowed a run in the first inning before last night. Now they can't stop doing it. Desmond Jennings led off last night's game with a home run. Kelly Johnson, the second batter tonight, homered to right field. I guess that's progress. Johnson has gone deep in back-to-back games. He hadn't faced Chris Tillman until tonight. All three outs recorded by Tillman came on fly balls to right fielder Nick Markakis. I'm not sure of the significance, but that's what happened. Of the ... read more

Hearing from Jones, Matusz, Tillman and Johnson

BOSTON - Adam Jones and Chris Davis were a combined 3-for-7 tonight with a double, home run, three RBIs, two walks and a run scored. In other words, their standard night. The duo is batting a combined .434 with seven homers and 29 RBIs. The rest of the team is batting .217 with four homers and 14 RBIs. "I think everyone thought we were going to go get a middle-of-the-lineup hitter," Jones said. "I'm glad what (Dan) Duquette and (Buck) Showalter did. They put it ... read more

Showalter speaks after 3-2 win

BOSTON - The Orioles have won five straight series at Fenway Park, 11 of the last 15 games and 21 of the last 30. The latest conquest became official when Jim Johnson retired Jacoby Ellsbury on a fly ball to left field to strand the potential tying run on first base. The bullpen was solid again tonight with 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Brian Matusz stranded two runners by striking out Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Stephen Drew in the sixth, one of the key moments of the ... read more

Showalter on Ayala, Reimold and more (updated)

BOSTON - Reliever Luis Ayala is available to pitch today after becoming dizzy yesterday at Camden Yards and spending a few hours at a local hospital. Ayala is throwing in the bullpen during batting practice to make certain that he's physically up to the task. "He wasn't feeling well and doctors took some of his vitals and decided to check it out a little further at the hospital, just to be on the safe side," said manager Buck Showalter. "I think for Louie to tell ... read more
