Brian Roberts reported to extended spring training Friday to continue rehabbing the herniated disk in his back - so far so good. He took batting practice swinging from both sides of the plate. Dave Trembley also told reporters Roberts took 50 ground balls.
Sunday is an off day for the team in Sarasota, but Roberts asked coaches down there if they could come to the field so he could get some extra work in. They obliged.
The club still feels June 9 (the date Roberts is eligible to come off the 60-day DL) is a very ambitious date. He's going to be in extended spring training for at least a week and then has to go out on a minor league rehab assignment.
How impactful do you think Roberts' return will be? It's safe to say the move will keep Ty Wigginton at first and will allow Markakis to hit in the two hole more often. Earlier in the week Dave Trembley said that's where he'd prefer Markakis to hit anyway.
Note: Cesar Izturis just ended an Orioles 29-inning drought without an extra-base hit with a double against Toronto in the sixth inning of Saturday's game. It's going to take more than one double to end the Orioles' season-long offensive drought, but we'll take what we can get.
