Suns right-fielder Brandon Miller reached second base on a throwing error in his first at-bat and popped up to go 0-for-2.

The Suns' Tony Renda contributed a pinch-hit single in the fifth inning. Catcher Pedro Severino went 0-for-1.

Suns right-hander Dixon Anderson picked up the win with one inning in the third. He allowed two hits and no runs. Anderson is 4-4 with a 2.70 ERA in 13 starts this season for the Suns.

Suns right-hander Pedro Encarnacion struck out one, gave up one hit and no runs. Encarnacion is 5-3 with a 2.68 ERA in 11 games this season for the Suns.

At the high Single-A California-Carolina League All-Star Game, the Carolina League All-Stars crushed the California League All-Stars 12-2.

Carolina put the game away with five runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth inning.

Potomac outfielder Billy Burns scored a run in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly, to give Carolina a 1-0 advantage. He finished 1-for-3 with two runs and a strikeout.

Right-hander Blake Schwartz pitched one inning, allowing no runs on one hit and one strikeout. Catcher Adrian Nieto also went 0-for-1 at the plate.

Cole helped the P-Nats clinch the Northern division for the first half of the season with an 8-0 shutout victory over the Frederick Keys on June 13 at Harry Grove Stadium.

The 21-year-old Cole tossed seven scoreless innings and only four hits, with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

The fourth-round selection from 2010 was part of the Michael Morse trade to Seattle during offseason. Cole was returned to the Nationals from the Oakland A's. He has gone 4-2 with a 4.16 ERA in 2013, and also won the Pitcher of the Week honors on May 6.

Cole has won three straight decisions and has yet to lose this season at Pfitzner Stadium. He has 82 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings, and has walked only 18 batters in 13 starts.

Chad Tracy is "Mr. Clutch" for the Nationals this season. He has only two hits in his last 10 games, but both were home runs to tie games in the late-going.

He also hit the first pinch-hit home run of the season in San Diego. Each home run felt, at the time, that it might be one of those hits that could change the season.

It felt like that Monday in Philadelphia when, in the top of the ninth, Tracy crushed an 0-2 fastball by Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon down the right field line and just inside the foul pole to even the game, 4-4.

Tracy said on MASN's "Nats Xtra" he knew Papelbon would not make it easy on him during the at-bat.

"I told myself to be real short and real compact and try and get as loose as I could and just cut it off," Tracy said.

The Nationals were in the position to tie thanks to Ian Desmond's huge hit in the eighth that trimmed the deficit to 4-3.

But the Phillies managed to get the walk-off single to win it versus Fernando Abad in the bottom of the ninth and won, 5-4.

It was certainly a big moment for the Nationals and Tracy, yet it didn't feel so after it was taken away that quickly with the Phillies getting the last at-bat run to win it.

"You tie it up late and everybody's emotions are running high and feeling good, and they come out and put some good at-bats together at the end and steal it right back from you," Tracy said.

He said the four runs for the offense was a good step, but says the team believes they can score more than that each game despite recent offensive woes.

"We expect to put up runs every time we go up to the plate or every inning," Tracy said. "It may not happen, but I think everybody in here expects to come back even if we are down."

Triple-A Syracuse shortstop <a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=walter001zac"target="_new">Zach Walters has really gotten hot at the plate in the past nine games. Especially the most recent six games, where he has connected for 12 hits.

Walters has done so well that the International League announced today that Walters has been named Batter of the Week for the period from June 10-16.

Walters is the first member of the Chiefs to win a weekly award this season.

The week has also demonstrated Walters' power - he hit three of his 14 homers since June 11.

The 14 homers is good enough to be tied for fourth place in the league this season. On Friday against Toledo, Walters slammed a pair of home runs, the first multi-homer game of his career.

Looking at the past five games, Walters is hitting .579 (11-for-19) with three doubles, three homers and seven RBIs.

The 23-year-old Walters is tops on the Chiefs with home runs, doubles (14), RBIs (32) and slugging percentage (.483).

He has made a nice rise the past year and a half. Walters began last season at high Single-A Potomac, before moving up to Double-A Harrisburg and then to Syracuse.

* Nationals director of player development Doug Harris told me that right-hander Lucas Giolito tossed 30 pitches off the mound this past weekend as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery.

The 18-year-old pitched in one game last season for the Gulf Coast Nationals. He is listed on the roster of the team's Web site. The GCL Nationals open against the GCL Mets on June 21.

* The 2013 short-season Single-A Auburn Doubledays roster has been announced. The roster is highlighted by the inclusion of the 68th overall selection in the recent First-Year Player Draft, pitcher Jacob Johansen.

Gary Cathcart is again the manager. Auburn hosts Batavia tonight.

Here is the roster:

Pitchers

Joel Barrientos
Kevin Dicharry
L.J. Hollins
Jake Johansen
Jake Joyce
Reynaldo Lopez

It is not the most important goal of the minor league system, but when the Nationals get one team into the postseason, it is a good measure of the talent and ability of the players to come together as a unit.

The Nationals did that one better - they had two teams clinch first-half crowns Sunday. Both Single-A squads, the low Single-A Hagerstown Suns and the high Single-A Potomac Nationals won their respective divisions in the first half of the season. This guarantees the Suns and P-Nats berths in the postseason playoffs.

It is also pretty amazing when a minor league team, especially at the Single-A level, wins a division with all the injuries, player changes and turnover to feed the higher level clubs.

Nationals director of player development Doug Harris was proud to see both teams clinch first place, Potomac taking the Carolina League first-half title Thursday with an 8-0 win and Hagerstown claiming the South Atlantic League first-half crown Sunday by virtue of Hickory's loss.

"Not that winning is everything, but this was a pretty good day," Harris said. "This is a byproduct of our players playing well and playing as a unit."

Potomac finished the first half of the season with a league-best 42-27 record thanks to a 9-8 win at Frederick on Sunday.

The P-Nats also send left-hander Robbie Ray, right-hander Blake Schwartz, outfielder Billy Burns, and catcher Adrian Nieto to Tuesday's Carolina-California League All-Star Game in San Jose. Nieto was chosen Sunday to replace Keys catcher Zane Chavez (oblique strain).

The Suns (38-29) defeated Lakewood on Sunday for their third straight win. Hickory is 39-31, finish 1/2 game back in the Northern Division.

Even with though he was struggling with his command, Stephen Strasburg gave the Nationals a chance. But in the end, the offense could not deliver the clutch hit, and the Nationals fell 2-0 at Cleveland on Sunday.

The Nationals had no outs and runners on first and third in the sixth, but could not score. A Ryan Zimmerman strikeout and an Adam LaRoche double play groundout ended the threat.

In the seventh, the Nationals loaded the bases with nobody out. Jhonatan Solano lined into a double play and Roger Bernadina grounded out to end the threat.

It is a theme that has plagued the Nationals offense throughout the first two and a half months of the season: the inability to come up with the game-changing hit.

"We had the right guys up there, we just didn't get the job done," said manager Davey Johnson on MASN's "Nats Xtra." "We played it real conservative, trying to get a run in the seventh inning. We made some baserunning mistakes. It is just a frustrating day all the way around."

Johnson said the Nats had to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them on offense, but time in and time out they could not get that crucial base hit.

"When we had runners on third base with nobody out we just didn't score," Johnson said. "That is frustrating. We have to be able to do that if we are going to do anything this year."

The Nationals were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position, and neither of those hits scored runs. Cleveland was able to turn three important double plays to extinguish scoring chances.

In the series, the Nationals managed just 17 hits and eight runs. As has been the case more often than not this season, the starters kept them in the game but the offense did not deliver. On Friday, Gio Gonzalez allowed one run on three hits in a 2-1 Nationals loss. On Sunday, Strasburg's uneven performance surrendered just one run in a 2-0 setback.

Until the Nationals get the offense going, the starters are going to leave the mound without the decision they deserve. That is the biggest problem the team faces as it head to Philadelphia back square at the .500 mark.

The last time the Nationals ventured to Cleveland was 2010. The weekend series was June 11-13, 2010, almost the exact same time of the year. Cleveland was hoping LeBron James would stay with the Cavaliers and the Indians were a below-.500 ball club.

The Indians won the first two games of the series pretty easily - 7-2 and 7-1. The Nationals' first two starters were Luis Atilano and J.D. Martin. The highlight early in the series was former Nationals outfielder Austin Kearns' two Friday night homers.

Ryan Zimmerman, Ian Desmond and Roger Bernadina were the only players from 2013 that had regular at-bats in that series.

The largest crowd, and the game that everyone pointed to in the series was Sunday, when rookie Stephen Strasburg made his second career start and first on the road.

On June 8, 2010, Strasburg had made his major league debut at Nationals Park. Before 40,315, Strasburg went seven innings and struck out 14 hitters. He struck out three batters in the second, sixth and seventh innings. He walked none and allowed four hits, one a two-run shot by Delwyn Young.

Later, Strasburg came back and struck out Young in the seventh. It was one of the loudest roars I had ever heard at Nationals Park from the crowd, and made that night feel like a playoff game.

Strasburg notched the win, as the Nationals downed the Pirates 5-2.

That next weekend in Cleveland, I was the sideline reporter for that game. The Nationals arrived with a 30-31 record.

There was hype surrounding the fireball throwing first year player. I remember talking to Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley that weekend about Strasburg. Even Browns rookie cornerback Joe Haden, who grew up in Fort Washington, Md., sat in the Nationals dugout during batting practice to catch a glimpse of the baseball rookie everyone was talking about.

Strsburg struggled a bit that Sunday. During the game, he continually had issues with the mound dirt and his footing, where he would plant and where he would drive off that foot. He seemed to lose his footing on a few pitches. The grounds crew came oout to try to pack down the dirt. It may have contributed to his five walks.

But Strasburg was able to hold the Indians to just two hits, a Travis Hafner solo shot and a Carlos Santana single. Strasburg left in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out.

Thanks to Drew Storen, the Nationals got out of the sixth inning. Strasburg finished with 5 1/3 innings, allowing just that one run, striking out eight in a 9-4 win over Cleveland. Strasburg was suddenly 2-0.

It will be interesting to see ff the mound causes Strasburg any more frustration this time around. It will be another Sunday start in Cleveland. But the stakes are much different now and Strasburg is a much different pitcher.

Saturday's thrilling 7-6 comeback victory over the Indians reveals a lot about what this 2013 version of the Nationals are capable of.

Ryan Zimmerman, Jayson Werth, Ian Desmond, Chad Tracy and Anthony Rendon all hit homers. All of them solo shots. That power is both a strength and a weakness.

There have not been enough two-run or three-run homers this season as compared to last season. But it cannot be underreported that this team crushed five home runs Saturday.

The three shots by Zimmerman, Werth and Desmond helped the Nationals race out to a 5-0 lead.

Cleveland responded with a stunning comeback, culminating in a Michael Brantley two-run double that gave the Tribe a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Then, Tracy slammed a dramatic pinch -hit home run with two outs in the eighth inning to tie the game at 6-6.

In the ninth, as if writing a storybook ending, rookie Rendon crushed his first major league home run and the Nationals led, 7-6.

Incredible stuff.

The Nationals have 10 hits in the series. Five of those are home runs.

A day after his first game off, Rendon was the hero with a homer to give the Nationals the lead for good.

Rendon went 3-for-5 with a double, homer, two runs and a RBI. He is now batting .333

The Nats pretty much have to keep the kid in the lineup. Yes, Rendon is the 2013 "kid" that Bryce Harper was in 2012. He should go nowhere the rest of the season. Rendon is a baseball player that can hit.

Second baseman Danny Espinosa has played two games for Triple-A Syracuse as he recovers from a wrist injury. He has been subbed out after two or three at-bats in each game by Will Rhymes.

Espinosa is hitting .200 (1-for-5) in two games with two runs, no walks and two strikeouts.

Left fielder Tyler Moore has started three games, and is hitting .182 (2-for-11) with a double, one homer and seven RBIs. He has had six RBIs in the last two games. Moore has struck out five times.

Numbers are important, but it is also crucial for each player get as many games as possible in a row, Espinosa for his wrist and confidence on offense and Moore to return to the consistency that helped him put up big numbers last season.

Espinosa is also looking to strengthen his wrist to the point where he doesn't feel it when he swings and then work on his hitting after struggling with the Nationals.

Espinosa and Moore are both getting good at-bats, and the repetition of playing every day will help them to hopefully get into a nice rhythm at the plate.

Second baseman Danny Espinosa has played two games for Triple-A Syracuse as he recovers from a wrist injury that has him on the 15-day disabled list. Espinosa has received two or three at-bats in each game and is then replaced by Will Rhymes.

Espinosa is batting .200 (1-for-5) with two runs, no walks and two strikeouts. He was hitting .158 in 44 games with the Nationals. These are the first games Espinosa has played in the minors since 2010.

Meanwhile, left fielder Tyler Moore has played three games for Syracuse and is hitting .182 (2-for-11) with a double, a homer, seven RBIs and five strikeouts. In the three games, Moore has had three, four and four official at-bats.

Of course, Espinosa and Moore are here for slightly different reasons but they really need at-bats. That is the main focus.

Espinosa has his at-bats limited as he recovers from a fractured wrist. Moore getting 11 at-bats in three games is key too getting his timing back and repetition should help his rhythm at the plate.

The Nationals' only run in Friday's opening series 2-1 loss to the Indians came on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the third inning.

Cleveland's Justin Masterson was able to strike out 10 batters. Indians pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

The Nationals managed just two hits, from Ryan Zimmerman and Steve Lombardozzi. Neither of those hits came after the third inning.

The Nationals had their chances, as did the Indians, to get some scoring going.

"We had right guys up with runners in scoring position with less than two outs," said manager Davey Johnson on MASN's Nats Xtra. "We got to put the ball in play. We got to do better than that."

There certainly is not a quick fix when the offense is struggling. But Johnson believes there is one thing he would like to see more of.

"Everybody has their own style of hitting," Johnson said. "The hitters are very patient looking for pitches. I prefer to be more aggressive. That is where we are."

Johnson wanted to give Anthony Rendon a day off, but it seems this lineup is fragile without him, or at least it lacks some form of a spark. That was the role Bryce Harper played.

When the offense was stagnating, Harper would come in and hit a couple of home runs to get it going. Rendon appears to be that player now. He had a hit in every game he had played since his return, a span of seven games. Dating back to May 2, Rendon has an eight-game hit streak.

Ironically, with Rendon's strategy to take the first pitch most times, he was one of the more patient hitters in the lineup. But going after the first pitch isn't necessarily the aggressiveness Johnson is looking for in the Nats' hot and cold offense.

But just two hits in the first three frames is not going to do it. Gio Gonzalez and the rest of the pitching staff deserves more.

Johnson will continue to tinker to try to get the bats moving again. Zimmerman back at third and Rendon at second tonight would be a good start.

For only the fifth time in his career, Ryan Zimmerman will be the designated hitter as the Nationals take on the Cleveland Indians. Ironically, on June 13, 2010, Zimmerman was the designated hitter and batted third as the Nationals beat the Indians, 9-4, in Cleveland. The game was Stephen Strasburg's second start of his career and his second win.

The lineup also has Steve Lombardozzi at second base. That means this will be Anthony Rendon's first day off since returning to the roster for a second stint. Jayson Werth will be batting fifth.

The high Single-A Potomac Nationals clinched the first-half division crown with a 8-0 win at Frederick. Jason Martinson hit three homers with four RBIs. He has 11 homers on the season.

Right-hander A.J. Cole went seven innings, scattered four hits, no runs, two walks and struck out 10. He fired 92 pitches, 60 for strikes. Cole is now 4-2 with a 4.16 ERA. He has won three consecutive starts.

It is looking pretty good for Taylor Jordan. He is the early leader for the organization's minor league pitcher of the year award with seven wins in 12 starts.

Double-A Harrisburg rolled past Richmond 9-0. The right-hander Jordan with the complete game shutout, nine innings, five hits, no runs, one walk and 11 strikeouts. He fired 112 pitches, 81 for strikes.

Jordan also helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs, a walk and his first RBI of the season.

He is now 5-0 with a 0.66 ERA for Harrisburg. He hasn't allowed a run since June 2. Jordan has 18 strikeouts the past two starts. Jordan has two complete-game shutouts in his last three starts.

Harrisburg pitching coach Paul Menhart said Jordan was able to use "deception mixed in with excellent feel for all" of his pitches.

That is a stunning 21 strikeouts between the 21-year-old Cole and the 24-year-old Jordan, a pair of right-handed prospects that are setting up bright futures with consistent pitching at the upper A and AA levels.

Nationals second baseman Anthony Rendon continues to prove he can hit at the big league level. In just 14 games, Rendon is hitting .306 (15-for-49) with five doubles, five RBIs, six walks and 12 strikeouts.

In the last 10 games, Rendon is hitting .382 (13-for-34) with four RBIs, seven strikeouts and all six of his walks.

So that shows he is getting used to pitches he is seeing and is finding a way to make contact.

His hand speed and balance at the plate are impressive. His approach can make up for his lack of experience against big league pitches. When you are a hitter, you can hit.

One tendency that some noticed early was his patience by always taking the first pitch.

Opponents noticed, and started firing first-pitch strikes to him because they knew he would not swing.

If you look at his last four games, it looks like Rendon is making the adjustment. In every game since Sunday, Rendon has gone after the first pitch at least once every game.

His productivity cannot be questioned. He has at least a hit in all six games since his return to the Nationals on June 5. But with Rendon taking the first pitch, a lot of times he was facing each at-bat with one less strike available than other hitters.

Against the Twins on Sunday in Game 1, Rendon went after the first pitch in two of his four at-bats. In Game 2 and the first two games in Denver, Rendon has gone after the first pitch at least once in each contest.

This is far from a scientific statistical breakdown, just a note to watch Rendon's at-bats this week, and see how many times he takes first pitch. Rendon is so good a hitter, he has still been able to hit above .300 even down 0-1 in the count.

In 30 plate appearances according to BaseballReference.com, Rendon is batting .333 in an 0-1 count. He is only batting .200 (1-for-5) when going after the first pitch. He has only done that in four games and five plate appearances. In 20 plate appearances after the count was 1-0, Rendon is batting .294. He has been able to maintain his consistency either way.

But you want to make sure the pitcher does not believe you will always take the first pitch. With Rendon mixing up his tendency on first pitches, he adds one more thread of doubt to a pitcher's mind as he decides what to throw the talented newcomer to begin each at-bat.

High Single-A Potomac Nationals right-hander Taylor Hill has performed well in his last two starts, following his two roughest starts of the season.

On back-to-back starts, May 24 and 29, Hill allowed a combined 20 hits and 14 runs in nine innings of work. But, on June 3 and 9, Hill rebounded to go 14 2/3 innings and gave up only one earned run. He struck out 12 and walked five in a pair of no decisions. The highlight of the two starts was Hill's 8 2/3 innings on June 3 at Myrtle Beach.

The former Vanderbilt standout is 4-2 with a 3.45 ERA in 12 starts with one complete game, one shutout, and 49 strikes to 10 total walks.

* Left-hander Matt Purke lost 6-2 to Single-A Hickory Tuesday, but was able to again strike out eight batters. The low Single-A Hagerstown southpaw went 4 2/3 innings, surrendering six hits, five runs, four earned runs, two homers, two walks and those eight strikeouts.

He is 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA in three starts, but has 22 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings with four walks.

* Potomac outfielder Billy Burns has hit .351 (13-for-37) with one triple and three RBI over the last 10 games. During the run, Burns had five straight multi-hit games from June 5 to June 9 where he went 11-for-21 (.524). During this 10-game stretch, Burns is 7-for-7 in stolen bases.
