Troy Smith vs. John Beck for the backup quarterback job?
Not anymore.
The Ravens have signed former Rams QB Marc Bulger to a one-year, $3.8 million deal, according to ESPN. Per the report, Bulger has incentives written into the contract which could "dramatically boost" his earnings.
The move gives Baltimore a proven backup quarterback and provides legitimate insurance in case Joe Flacco happens to go down with an injury.
Bulger, 33, has played 96 games in nine NFL seasons, all of which came with the Rams. He has thrown for 22,814 yards, 122 touchdowns and 93 interceptions.
The two-time Pro-Bowler played only nine games (eight starts) last year.
His best season came in 2006, when he threw for 4,301 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
$3.8 million is a large chunk of change for a backup QB, but the Ravens sense that they're close to a Super Bowl. They don't want their entire season to come crashing down if Flacco has to miss significant time.
UPDATE: The Ravens have announced the Bulger deal; it's official pending a physical.
