Todd Heap and Edgar Jones used to be positional buddies.
For parts of the last two years, they practiced together, sat in meetings together, studied film together.
Today, they scuffled together.
After spending a portion of 2008 and all of 2009 as a tight end, Jones has made a move back to the defensive side of the ball this year, and is now getting reps at outside linebacker. During a full contact goal line drill this morning, Jones and Heap got tangled up and started jawing.
"It's goal line live period, guys getting after it," Jones said. "Me and Todd were kind of wrestling, getting after each other back and forth. Todd is a competitor. I'm a competitor. We're good friends."
After some initial chatter, Jones gave Heap a shove, and Heap walked closer to the linebacker, getting facemask-to-facemask with him.
Surprisingly, Heap then gave Jones a shove back, and players had to rush in to break up the two.
"That's my fellow tight end last year, so we were just doing a little bit of talking," Heap said. "But hey, that happens when you're playing football."
Jones said that he and Heap are good friends and they cleared things up immediately after the play was over.
"Before practice, me and Todd were laughing and clowning with each other. Even after it was over, we were laughing and clowning with each other," Jones said. "We fight just like brothers.
"If Todd needs my help, he's got it. He's on the other side of the ball now. That's the guy who taught me how to play tight end. No hard feelings; me and Todd talked about it as soon as it was over."
