Cut by the Ravens nearly two weeks ago, rookie cornerback/punt returner Prince Miller is now back with the team that signed him as an undrafted free agent back in April.
"It's good to be back," Miller said this week. "It seems like I was only gone for a little while. It's definitely good to be back around the guys."
Miller initially made the Ravens' 53-man roster out of camp, but was waived a day later when the team opted to sign free agent cornerback Bryan McCann.
Instead of sticking around as a member of the Ravens' practice squad, Miller signed with the Patriots' P-squad, and spent about a week in New England.
But when the Ravens went looking to add another player with punt return experience to their active roster earlier this week, they came back to Miller, and signed him off the Pats' developmental roster. Ironically, McCann was the guy who was cut to free a spot for Miller.
"It feels good, but in the position I'm in you can't get cocky," Miller said of being on a 53-man roster. "You have to go out and treat every day like your life depends on it."
By rule, because he was signed off another team's practice squad, Miller will now be with the Ravens for at least three weeks.
The Georgia product saw a lot of time during training camp as a nickel back, and he will provide depth in the Baltimore secondary in that capacity. With Tom Zbikowski coming off a shaky outing against the Jets in the punt return department, Miller also adds another proven return man to the mix.
"I really don't know what I'm doing yet," Miller said. "Whatever they need me for, I'm ready to fill in."
Miller got his first taste of the business side of the NFL when the Ravens abruptly let him go after initially making their final roster out of camp. The 22-year-old might not have been thrilled with how things went down, but he said that process was something that he'll be able to learn from and look back on as his career progresses.
"I went through it and I learned through it," he said. "It's something that you learn from. It's something that's going to help out in the future. If it happens again, I'll be ready for it. You never know how to learn things until you go through it. This is a business. Decisions have to be made."
