I'm out with some friends last night, trying to enjoy one of the few free nights I've had in the last couple months, when I get a text message that cornerback Darrelle Revis is poised to sign a new contract with the Jets.
That means, of course, that the two-time Pro Bowler, who is widely considered the top cornerback in the league, will almost certainly be in action when the Ravens take on the Jets a week from today in the regular season opener.
I have a feeling that John Harbaugh, Anquan Boldin and Joe Flacco are not too pleased with that development.
The Ravens will now have to go up against a corner who, at his best, can shut down an opposing team's top wide receiver, and can free up other members of the Jets defense to turn their focus to other offensive weapons.
Boldin will likely have Revis on his hip all night long, which means that Derrick Mason, Todd Heap, Ray Rice and company will have to step up and come out of the gates with solid performances.
How much does Revis change the landscape of the Jets defense? It's hard to really quantify it, but the way Jets head coach Rex Ryan has been talking on HBO's Hard Knocks, he knows that having the corner around makes them a significantly better team.
As if the Ravens facing their former defensive coordinator and a bunch of their former players to open the regular season on Monday Night Football in the first game at the new Meadowlands wasn't enough, the Jets will now have their top defender in action.
