Jimmy Smith on returning this Sunday: "Realistically, I doubt it"

Ravens rookie cornerback Jimmy Smith says he's made progress in his rehab from a high left ankle sprain. He returned to the practice field today and ran for the first time with his full body weight coming down on his ankle.

Still, Smith admits that he's not all that close to full strength, and as a result, his chances of playing Sunday against the Texans are not very good.

"I mean, I'm optimistic about everything," Smith said when asked about the Houston game, "but realistically, I doubt it."

Head coach John Harbaugh angrily put an end to Smith's session with reporters when he heard the rookie cornerback discussing his injury in the locker room, but Harbaugh seemed to agree with Smith's assessment during his late-afternoon press conference.

"He's not there yet, that's for sure," Harbaugh said. "We'll just have to see throughout the course of the week. I've got my fingers crossed. This was the target week, and we'll just have to see how it goes."

Smith said he's slowly progressed since suffering the injury one month ago, and now feels close to 80 percent healthy.

"I've just got to get over that last little hump, agility - moving side to side and lateral and backpedaling and planting and that stuff," Smith said. "That's the final stage we're in right now.

"I can stand, I can walk. That's what makes it frustrating, is the fact that you get healthy and you hit a wall and you want to push past it, but I can't go out there and try to do something and re-injure myself."
