Earning starts on a Nats team with depth

Before Saturday’s game, Ryan Zimmerman said this Nationals team already has better chemistry than last year’s squad. He said the guys get along and have fun.

Zimmerman added that the 2009 team has better defense and that should help the Nats avoid giving teams extra outs.

After the game, Manny Acta said Austin Kearns earned the right field job.

Acta said Kearns made adjustments in spring training that helped him earn the job.

He also added that while Nick Johnson will start at first base in the opener Monday, Adam Dunn will also get some starts there, especially against tough lefties.

About 10 days ago, Josh Willingham was told he wouldn’t be starting. Acta said he will still start Dunn in left, but he wishes it were softball where he could put four outfielders out there!

Willingham will get his starts eventually. This is a team with depth; you add some experience, and who knows what will happen.
