One thing about Nick Johnson this season is that he seems to be doing it all. What a difference a year makes.
Wednesday night against the Pirates, Nick tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning with an RBI single. He also stole his first base since August 18, 2006 (at Philly). It was his 26th career stolen base. The big first baseman is hitting .333 (by the way that’s 60 points higher than his career batting average of .273) with 4 homers and 25 RBI.
Nick comes from a baseball family. After all, his uncle is former Philadelphia Phillies infielder Larry Bowa who now works as Joe Torre’s third base coach with the Dodgers.
Nick told me his uncle has helped him over his career. He said he told him to do something every day with baseball. He also said that he probably speaks with Larry more today than when he was younger.
Nick and his wife Liz are enjoying life in our Nation’s Capital. Nick even had the chance last season to have lunch with President Bush. He told me the President had a lot of baseball questions, and his teammates wanted to talk more about other topics! They ate hamburgers at the White House. Not many people get that opportunity.
Nick’s daughter Brianna loves watching her daddy play at Nationals Park, and even though she’s just 3 years old, she can already sing Take Me Out To The Ballgame!
Johnson’s son, Nick Jr., is only six months old, so he’s just in the cooing stages--and he did a lot of that when we visited the Johnsons at home this week. Nick and Nick Jr. were so cute smiling at each other.
You’ll have to tune in tonight to watch the father and son duo along with mom Liz and daughter Brianna. Nick’s Mom Paula will also join us on the phone to share some of Nick’s early childhood baseball moments. It’s a Covering the Bases segment you’ll really enjoy.
