I have been covering the Redskins for a decade now and one thing has been consistent: Offseason headlines trump regular season consistency. In other words, while the rest of the nation gears up for NCAA basketball, Ashburn has crafted its own version of March Madness.
Last offseason was calm by Redskins standards, as the team kept all of its draft picks and made some modest moves in free agency. Well, that model lasted one year as they are back making headlines once again. I was up in New York City covering the Big East basketball tournament Friday and here comes the late-evening breaking news (very similar feel to the Easter evening news of the Donovan McNabb trade) that the burgundy and gold has traded three first-round picks and a second-round pick to St. Louis for the second overall selection this year.
The deal will be made official later today with all indications that this is being done to get Robert Griffin III or Andrew Luck (if the Colts shock the world and pass on the Stanford signal-caller).
Although I am happy that the franchise does not appear to be going after Peyton Manning, I do have mixed feelings about giving up so much for one player. Smart first-round picks are valuable as we saw with Ryan Kerrigan, so to give that up for the next couple years is scary to me and a bit pricey. I sure hope that the quarterback they select can play at the next level. Cam Newton was a pleasant surprise last season, but Carolina did not have to give up multiple picks in order to find out if he could play.
My position has always been that if you have a talented and deep offensive line, everything else (especially quarterback) works better. It's not the sexiest unit on the field but as we all know from the Hogs, but it is vital. This franchise has not paid enough attention to that unit for years, but I hope with the maneuvering to get a true franchise quarterback that they do so immediately - starting with the free agency period that begins later today.
Do you think it was too much to move up to the second spot and who do you want to see the Redskins go after in free agency?
