Filling the days of the baseball offseason

As the days get shorter and colder, we’re right smack in the middle of football season--both college and the Pro’s, the NHL is underway and the NBA is about to kick off.

Three months remain before thoughts begin to turn toward Spring Training camps around the country and for the Washington Nationals, that means Vierra, Florida. Many of you plan your winter getaways to Florida, and no better time to enjoy the Sunshine state than February and March while taking in a Nats grapefruit league game.

It’ll be a chance to get a look at the Nationals coaches for next season, who are a combination of youth and high energy.

Jim Riggleman, Randy Knorr, Marquis Grissom.

Rick Eckstein and Pat Listach join veteran pitching coach Randy St. Claire who returns for his 7th year with the franchise.

In the meantime, many broadcasters have other jobs during the baseball offseason.

Our buddy, Bob Carpenter will call some other sports until the gloves and bats are brought out in the spring.

My partner on MASN’s Nats Extra, Ray Knight has a hunting preserve in his hometown of Albany, Georgia that requires his expertise over the winter months.

As for me, this is my 30th year broadcasting football and basketball for the University of Maryland Terrapins and working with two great coaches, Ralph Friedgen and Gary Williams. Gary was a terrific high school baseball player, as well as a standout on the hardwood.

So we do keep busy. And one of the nice things I enjoy is getting to meet and visit with so many of our Nats fans. They are everywhere!

I hope you and I get to talk a little Nats or Terps whenever we meet.
