Nearly 150 Sarasota-area youth will have the opportunity to receive professional instruction from current and former Orioles players at a series of baseball clinics the club will host during the coming weeks. Through OriolesREACH, the team will host children from the Central Sarasota County Little League and Cal Ripken Baseball League at the Buck O'Neil Baseball Complex on Saturday, February 4. The Orioles will then travel to the Miracle League Field for a clinic with members of the Miracle League of Manasota on Saturday, February 25. The club then plays host to youth from the Roy McBean Boys & Girls Clubs at the Ed Smith Stadium main field on Saturday, March 10. An additional, free public clinic is planned for April, with details to come. All participating children will also receive giveaway items and player autographs at the clinics.

"Providing major league coaching to area youth through baseball clinics is one of our favorite ways to give back to the community," said Laura Williams, Orioles Director of Florida Operations. "When you see the children interacting with big leaguers, learning baseball skills and seeing the professionalism of our players, you understand the impact the Orioles have with our young people."

Former Orioles Mike Devereaux, Dave Ford and Jeff Tackett, along with Orioles Hall of Fame catcher Chris Hoiles, will instruct over 80 youth from the Central Sarasota County Little League and Cal Ripken Baseball League in pitching, hitting, fielding, throwing and baserunning on February 4. The clinic will be held from 10:00 a.m. - noon at the Orioles' minor league facility, the Buck O'Neil Baseball Complex at Twin Lakes Park, located at 6700 Clark Road. The Oriole Bird will also appear at the clinic, and the Orioles will provide all participants with a complimentary lunch following the event.

Current and former Orioles, including right-handed pitcher Jim Johnson, former infielder Mike Bordick and Hoiles, will conduct a clinic for over 25 members of the Miracle League of Manasota on February 25. The clinic is part of a field dedication celebration of the Miracle League Field and will begin at 2:30 p.m., immediately following the dedication ceremony. The Oriole Bird will also participate in the event and refreshments will be served to the kids. The Miracle League Field is located at Longwood Park, 6050 Longwood Run Boulevard.

On March 10, right-handed pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, Bordick, Hoiles and other Orioles players will welcome 40 children from the Roy McBean Boys & Girls Club for a clinic on the main field at Ed Smith Stadium, located at 2700 12th Street. The clinic will begin at 1:00 p.m. and include instruction in pitching, hitting, fielding, throwing and baserunning. The Oriole Bird will also be present and refreshments will be provided.

Following Spring Training, the club will host a free youth clinic open to the public, hosted by several of the team's minor league players. Details regarding the date, time, location and application process will be announced soon.

Since the Orioles arrived in Sarasota County in late 2009, the Orioles and OriolesREACH have interacted with thousands of Sarasota-area fans through baseball clinics, appearances, food drives, cash gifts to nonprofits, and donations of memorabilia and playing field usage.

"We're excited about all of the activities we have planned for the 2012 spring training season and beyond," Williams said. "The Orioles are strongly committed to continuing the partnership with the community that we started at the end of 2009 when we first moved to Sarasota County. The community has warmly embraced us, and we feel a tremendous kinship with the residents and visitors, alike."

Tickets can be reserved through the SCF athletic department at 941-752-5261.

Formerly known as Manatee Community College , the institution has enjoyed a rich athletic tradition throughout their 54 year history. The baseball program has produced over 185 professional baseball players and over 350 players have gone on to four year universities. Legendary coach Tim Hill Sr., only the second baseball coach in school history, is in his 32nd and last year as head coach of the team.

"The State College of Florida is extremely grateful to the Orioles for enabling us to continue our tradition of facing a major league team," said State College of Florida Athletic Director Matthew Ennis. "The game means so much to our school and the surrounding community and our players are thrilled for the opportunity to play at Ed Smith Stadium."

Current Orioles pitcher Jim Johnson is a student at State College of Florida, taking online classes to complete his Liberal Arts degree.

For the last 12 years the school played an annual exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the only junior college in the nation to play a major league team in spring training. The game against the Orioles will allow the State College of Florida to continue this tradition.

For the second consecutive year, Sarasota County libraries and the Baltimore Orioles are teaming up to promote reading through the Orioles Big League Reader program. Children who sign up for the program and read three or more books in the month of February will receive a reserved grandstand ticket to the Wednesday, March 14 game versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. Last season over one hundred Sarasota-area children completed the program and were eligible to receive a free ticket to an Orioles spring training game. March 14 is also "Kids Run the Bases" Day presented by Schofield, Hand & Bright Orthopaedics; following the game, all kids 14 and under will be invited onto the field to take their turn running the bases.

"Just like rounding the bases in a ballgame, each time a child reads a book they advance further on the road to success." said Sarabeth Kalajian, general manager, Sarasota County library system.

During February children ages six and up who check out three books from any of the nine Sarasota County public libraries will receive a Home Run Reading Card. Upon reading the books and returning them to the library, a library staff member will initial their reading card, which is good for a reserved grandstand ticket to the March 14, 2012 game at Ed Smith Stadium.

"The Orioles are excited to once again partner with Sarasota County libraries to promote a love of both reading and baseball among area youth," said Orioles Director of Florida Operations Laura Williams. "Last year's program was a great success and we look forward to rewarding even more youth who embrace reading this spring."

The Baltimore Orioles spring training season begins at Ed Smith Stadium on Monday, March 5 when the Orioles take on the Pittsburgh Pirates at 7:05 p.m.

For more information, contact the Sarasota County Call Center at 941-861-5000 and ask about the Big League Reader program.

The Washington Nationals today agreed to terms with right-handed relief pitcher Brad Lidge on a one-year contract. Nationals Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

One of the game's most accomplished active relievers, Lidge is 26-31 with 67 holds, 223 saves and a 3.44 ERA (227 ER/594.0 IP) in 592 career games/one start.

In 10 seasons with the Phillies (2008-11) and Astros (2002-07), Lidge has fanned over 31 percent of all batters faced and his strikeout rate of 12.0 per 9.0 innings is the highest all-time among pitchers to throw at least 500 big league innings.

Lidge is a two-time National League All-Star (2005, '08) and was named the National League Comeback Player of the Year in 2008 after posting 41 saves and a 1.95 ERA in 72 appearances with the Phillies. In 2008, including the Phillies' post-season run which culminated in a World Championship, Lidge did not suffer a single blown save in 48 chances.

Lidge has four times tallied 30 or more saves in a season and his 157-strikeout campaign of 2004 established a new National League single-season mark for strikeouts in relief.

Lidge was drafted by Houston with the 17th-overall selection in the 1998 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Notre Dame.

With the addition of Lidge, the Nationals' 40-man roster currently stands at 37.
