New Oriole Steve Johnson's first outing with the organization was a pretty quick turnaround with an unfortunately quick ending.
Johnson didn't join the Baysox until the evening before his first start with the club--without wasting any time, he took the mound during his first full day with Bowie and pitched 4 ½ innings, all in the rain, before the grounds crew pulled out the tarp to end his outing. After a two-hour delay, Johnson wasn't able to finish what he'd started so soon after joining the club, but he'll get another chance this Saturday.
In what's scheduled to be his second start within the Orioles' organization, Johnson will take the mound at Fenway Park. It won't be with the big club (the Orioles will be in Toronto that day), but still with the Baysox who will face the Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Red Sox at 12:05 p.m.
Since Boston will be in New York and the Red Sox-Yankees game will be broadcast on FOX on Saturday, Double-A Portland (12:05) and Triple-A Pawtucket (4:05) will get the opportunity to take the field at Fenway, and the games will be broadcast on NESN.
Without a doubt it's been a fast and furious few days for the new young Oriole, Steve Johnson, but he'll have a chance to feel like a big leaguer before too long when he takes the mound in a Major League ballpark like Fenway on Saturday.
Here's hoping his development in the O's farm system is fast and fruitful, and maybe we'll see him in an Orioles uniform on the mound at Camden Yards one of these days.
Update: Dave Johnson also passed along the info that Steve is no stranger to Major League ballparks. As a 14-year-old, the right-hander pitched a complete game at Camden Yards to beat Calvert Hall for the varsity MIAA Championship. He also took the mound at PETCO Park as recently as last year.
