Adding Nix to the mix

The Nationals signed veteran Laynce Nix to a minor league contract today with an invite to spring training.

Nix is a pretty good complementary player, all things considered. At 30, he's never been a regular, but as a bench player he's gotten the job done. In 483 big league games with Texas, Milwaukee and Cincinnati he's hit ..243, with 48 home runs and 182 RBIs. His 162-game average is 16 homers and 61 RBIs. He's played all three outfield slots - mostly center - and is considered a slightly above-average defender. Last year with the Reds, he hit a career-high .291 with four homers and 18 RBIs.

Nix is a lefty swinger, and would seem to have a slight edge on fellow non-roster invitee Matt Stairs in terms of age and defensive prowess.
