Wells could play Sunday versus Ravens

Just days after possibly losing their top running back for the season, the Arizona Cardinals received some fortunate news concerning Chris “Beanie” Wells.

Wells, who suffered a bone bruise in his right knee during last Sunday’s loss to Pittsburgh, is recovering nicely and could see action this Sunday when the team travels to Baltimore.

The injury, which occurred in the second quarter against the Steelers, forced Wells to miss the rest of the game, possibly suggesting that the former Ohio State back might need surgery and would miss the rest of the season.

But as Wells told 620-AM in Phoenix, his knee is on the right track and that it’s only a “matter of controlling the swelling.” Wells also said he hopes to play Sunday and that “I personally think I will be.”

This news should obviously be taken with a grain of salt, however. No player is likely to admit he won’t be ready to go come game time and as Kent Somers of the azcentral.com blog cautions, the real evidence is whether Wells is on the practice field later this week.

If Wells is unable to play, Cardinals would rely on the trio of Alfonso Smith, Chester Taylor and LaRod Stephens-Howling. Wells has rushed for 423 yards this season but is tied for third with six rushing touchdowns.
