The status of Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith for tonight's game against the Patriots is in doubt after the death overnight of his younger brother in a motorcycle accident.
According to the Ravens, 19-year-old Tevin Chris Jones died early Sunday morning in an accident in Westmoreland County in northeast Virginia. Torrey Smith was notified of his brother's death at the Ravens' team hotel shortly after 1 a.m., met with coach John Harbaugh and left to be with his family.
"This is devastatingly sad, sad news," said Harbaugh in a team-issued statement. "Torrey and his family are a close, special family, and our hearts and thoughts reach out to all of them. Our hearts ache today. We pray for Tevin, his mother, Torrey and the rest of the family. God bless Tevin."
Harbaugh said he didn't know whether Smith would play against the Patriots, though published reports have indicated that Smith wants to.
"Torrey's priority is his family," Harbaugh said. "We understand that completely."
On his Twitter account Sunday morning, Smith wrote: "I can't believe my little brother is gone...be thankful for your loved ones and tell them you love them...this is the hardest thing ever"
In a subsequent tweet, Smith added, "I can't say a bad thing about him...proud to have him as a brother...RIP Tevin" and included a photo of him with Tevin, who wore a Ravens cap and a team jersey with his brother's number.
