The Ravens have been unable to build on their late second-quarter surge, giving the Browns what might turn out to be an insurmountable margin.
After a nice defensive stand near midfield, Baltimore forced Cleveland to punt. But return man Tandon Doss muffed it, and the Browns recovered at the Ravens’ 11. Two plays later, Jason Campbell connected with Gary Barnidge for a 4-yard touchdown pass and a 21-10 lead with just over 20 minutes to go in the game.
Campbell has tied a career high with three touchdown passes.
Eleven points isn’t really that big of a deficit, but the Ravens are struggling mightily to just move the ball on the Browns defense.
Baltimore really has just one productive drive, and that was on the strength of two nice Joe Flacco passes for 65 yards.
The Ravens again can’t run the ball with only 43 rushing yards, 23 of which came from Flacco via scrambles. So, can the Ravens come back?
Their offense better find a rhythm and soon if Baltimore will leave Cleveland with a 12th straight win over the Browns.
Update: Doss atoned for his muffed punt that set up a Browns touchdown by returning a punt 36 yards to the Cleveland 32.
And the offense capitalized.
Flacco went 4-for-4 for 30 yards and a 7-yard touchdown pass to Marlon Brown. Flacco then hit Brown again for the two-point conversion and the Ravens have narrowed the Browns’ lead to 21-18 with 12:09 to go.
Brown now has two touchdown passes today and five on the season to go with his two-point conversion grab.
Flacco is 19-for-35 for 203 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. This is all of a sudden a game again, so stay tuned.
Update II: The Browns drove 67 yards in 15 plays and 6:30, setting up a Billy Cundiff 22-yard field goal that extended the lead to 24-18 with 14 seconds to go. Outlook is grim.
Update III: That’ll do it. The Ravens have lost 24-18 to slip to 3-5 on the season, their worst eight-game start since opening 2-6 in 2005.
