Harbaugh stops in for a chat

Before I get to some more notes on the Ravens’ fifth-round picks, I thought I’d pass along some quick updates courtesy of head coach John Harbaugh.

After the Ravens’ selection of tight end Dennis Pitta, Harbaugh popped into the media workroom for a quick chat. Needless to say, he seems really pleased with how the Ravens’ draft has gone.

Harbaugh loves the Sergio Kindle selection, saying that the outside linebacker plays with great intensity. The Ravens also are thrilled about how their special teams units might now look with Kindle, Brendon Ayanbadejo, Tavares Gooden, Jameel McClain, Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura all on board.

Kindle will play behind Jarret Johnson, but also could see action at the same time as Johnson, pushing the veteran linebacker to the inside on occasion.

How will the addition of Kindle affect Paul Kruger?

Well, Kruger is still bulking up in an attempt to move to defensive end. He’s currently up to 274 pounds, and should be in the mix for reps at D-end this season.

As for the tight ends, Harbaugh likes both Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta a lot. Dickson might be more of an explosive guy, but Harbaugh says Pitta can stretch the field as well and will work will on seam routes.

There might be some people who view these picks as a sign that Todd Heap will have competition for his starting job. That’s not the case; Heap will remain the Ravens’ starter.
