Gaither has “a small tear” in his back

Doctors apparently have finally pinpointed what has been ailing Jared Gaither.

The Ravens’ offensive tackle has a small tear in his back that will keep him out at least two or three weeks, according to head coach John Harbaugh.

Gaither has missed almost all of training camp with back spasms and cramps, and after seeing a specialist in Baltimore a week ago, he flew out to California on Wednesday to get a second opinion from another specialist. That specialist, Dr. Watkins, diagnosed the tear.

“It’s not a serious thing, but it’s going to keep him out for a couple weeks until it settles down, because it’s what’s causing the spasms apparently,” Harbaugh said. “He’s going to have to work as hard as he can, and we’ll have to try and work it out.

“I wouldn’t hold my breath for about two weeks, three weeks, through camp here, and we’ll see where we’re at at that point.”

Oniel Cousins has gotten the majority of the reps at right tackle with the first team with Gaither out.

Gaither slowly walked out to practice today in shorts and with a towel wrapped around his neck. He watched the session from the sidelines, which is apparently where he’ll be stuck for a little while.
