Troy jumpstarts trade possibilities

Stuck as the Ravens’ third-string quarterback, Troy Smith would almost certainly welcome a trade.

With two quality, proven quarterbacks ahead of Smith on the depth chart, the Ravens would be interested in dealing the former Heisman Trophy winner as well.

After last night, the chances of Smith getting traded likely went up.

The four-year veteran went 8-of-11 for 71 yards and a touchdown against the Giants last night, posting a sparkling quarterback rating of 119.9.

Smith’s high point of the night came when he led the Ravens on an 11-play, 80-yard touchdown drive midway through the second half. He spread the ball around to four different receivers and calmly took what the defense gave him.

Yes, Smith’s performance came against the Giants’ second and third-team defenses. But it also came while playing behind the Ravens’ second-team offensive line and with fairly inexperienced wide receivers.

After a rough training camp and a poor first preseason game, Smith has showed well the last two weeks, and could have jumpstarted some interest around the league.

There are a handful of teams who still have yet to finalize their quarterback situations. If one of them is interested in a solid backup quarterback, they might now be giving Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome a call.
