Source: Mattison heading to Michigan, Pagano to earn promotion (updated)

It looks like the Ravens will have a new defensive coordinator next season.

Nothing is official yet, but I'm hearing that Greg Mattison, who has served as the Ravens' defensive coordinator for the last two seasons, is likely to take the same position at the University of Michigan.

A source tells me that if Mattison does leave the Ravens, secondary coach Chuck Pagano would replace him as defensive coordinator.

Update at 6:20 p.m.: Now it's official. The Ravens have announced Mattison is leaving to take the defensive coordinator job at Michigan, and Pagano will take over the coordinator post.

Pagano has been the Ravens' secondary coach for the last three seasons. He is well-liked in the Ravens' locker room, and the source tells me that his promotion would go over well among the players.

He was considered for the Ravens defensive coordinator job two years ago prior to Mattison getting hired.

Mattison's relationship with the University of Michigan and new Wolverines coach Brady Hoke is likely what would draw him back to the collegiate level.

He's been effective running the defense here in Baltimore. In two seasons with Mattison as defensive coordinator, the Ravens finished in the top 10 in defense both times. Baltimore had the NFL's No. 3 defense in 2009 and ranked No. 10 this past season.
