That's why, even though Smith feels like he's closing in on full strength after battling a groin injury, he was held out of full-team drills today in his first time back on the practice field in the last five days.
"I got to do individual (drills), so it wasn't that much, but it felt good," Smith said after the session. "I feel like I made a lot of progress."
Smith will get the benefit of a day off tomorrow, as the Ravens will not hold practice. He'll have time to let the groin rest up a bit, and then hopes to be able to give it a full-go during Monday's practice.
"I'm definitely going to try and go on Monday," Smith said. "Hopefully they let me go."
The "better safe than sorry" mantra is definitely in affect with Smith right now, who missed the last four practice sessions after tweaking a groin muscle. The process has frustrated the rookie cornerback, but he says he understands where the training staff is coming from.
"You can never be too safe," Smith said. "I don't want to go out there and re-tweak it and be out longer, so the staff's been taking pretty good precaution on it."
The Colorado product has been trying to maximize his time away from the huddle by getting mental reps and talking with the veteran cornerbacks on the Ravens' roster.
"I get to sit there and talk to Fox (Domonique Foxworth) when he's not in, and he's teaching me stuff and showing me what's going on," Smith said. "So, I think that's helping me a lot."
