Ben Grubbs returns to practice; Jimmy Smith making progress

The Ravens welcomed Ben Grubbs back to the practice field today after their starting left guard had missed the last two weeks with a toe injury.

Grubbs was participating in individual drills during the portion of practice open to the media, and was getting down in his normal stance. It remains to be seen how effective the five-year veteran can be at this point, but he said he's been able to resume jogging and feels like the toe is improving.

"That was a huge step, first time jogging since I had the injury," Grubbs said prior to practice. "That was the upside of the situation. The downside is it's sore. I wouldn't say it's more sore than it usually is, but it's pretty sore. I'll go out there and see what I can today. Hopefully, it will loosen up and I'll be ready to go."

Grubbs will likely be a gametime decision for Sunday night's game against the Jets. If Grubbs still isn't healthy enough to suit up, Andre Gurode will start in his place at left guard for the second straight week.

"My thought process is just to take baby steps," Grubbs said. "Hopefully, by Sunday I'll be ready to go. ... With all the things I can take before the game, shots, that should put me over the top."

Center Matt Birk (knee) and defensive end Cory Redding (toe) also returned to practice today after missing yesterday's session.

Meanwhile, cornerback Jimmy Smith, who suffered a high left ankle sprain early in the Ravens' regular season opener, is out of a walking boot and says he's starting to do some light jogging.

"I don't run with my full body weight," Smith said. "I just do a little bit. The mobility is still not there. I'm about to hit the treadmill right now."

Smith will not play this week against the Jets, but having the bye week next week will allow him time to recover and have a shot at playing the following week against the Texans. The rookie cornerback says that Week 6 game is what he's targeting for a return at this point.

"Hopefully, I'll be back by then," Smith said. "It's still bothering me a little bit. I've got to push through it."
