When NFL players are asked to say their name and college during the pregame introductions on Sunday Night Football, most do just that.
"Ray Rice, Rutgers University."
"Joe Flacco, Delaware."
Terrell Suggs is not most players.
So when Suggs was asked to say his name and college prior to last Sunday night's game against the Steelers, the fun-loving Pro Bowl linebacker went with the following: "Sizzle, Ball So Hard University."
Suggs' comments were immediately embraced by the online community. Videos of the introduction appeared on YouTube seemingly within minutes, and his quote is still being repeated on Twitter.
For those still confused about what exactly Suggs' comments mean, here's a basic breakdown:
"Sizzle", of course, is Suggs' nickname. "Ball So Hard University" comes from a Jay-Z and Kanye West song called "N****s in Paris" in which the phrase "ball so hard" is repeated throughout the track.
Today, Suggs continued the "Ball So Hard" discussion by showing up to his weekly press conference wearing the t-shirt pictured at right, and the first minute and a half of his session with reporters covered his decision to showcase his playful personality during his introduction Sunday night.
"A lot of guys on this team attended Ball So Hard University, including myself," Suggs said with a giant smile. "The Dean of students and President of the school is actually Shawn Carter (aka Jay-Z). It was just fun. It really started because I said "Dahni and Duke University", those are my two children. They kept saying it was my parents and they kept messing it up. I said, you know what, I'm gonna do something different. I just so happened to be listening to the song going into the interview, and Ball So Hard University was born."
Suggs said he's not selling the t-shirts himself, but there are a couple Web sites which have already taken the shirt and put them up for sale.
The linebacker was surprised that his comments got as much attention as they did, and said he's gotten a lot of positive feedback from friends and teammates.
"It was trending (on Twitter) for like 48 hours. It was crazy," Suggs said. "It's a song, it's an actual song by Jay-Z, and I thought people would've actually thought the song was hotter, but as soon as I said it, it started (getting) crazy."
Suggs joked that the ACT score required to get into Ball So Hard University is "not very high", and said that he doesn't have a mascot for the school just yet.
"We're working on that," Suggs said. "Jay-Z will probably think of something for that."
Quarterback Joe Flacco was asked whether he's applied to BSHU.
"Hey man, I hope everybody on our team can automatically get accepted into that," Flacco said with a laugh. "That's pretty cool. I heard about that, and that's one of those things i wish i was thoughtful and cool enough to come up with that on my own."
