Terrell Suggs said earlier this offseason that he was dedicated to putting his admittedly sub-par 2009 season behind him and getting back to his Pro Bowl level of play.
Suggs was around Owings Mills for much of the Ravens' offseason workout program, and was on the field when the team held its mandatory minicamp.
However, when the Ravens' voluntary minicamps rolled around, Suggs was nowhere to be found.
Today, on the Scott Garceau Show on 105.7 The Fan, Suggs defended his choice not to appear at any of the Ravens' OTAs, saying that for him, working out with his trainer in Arizona is how he can best prepare for the season.
"Some guys need to be under the supervision of the coaches and the strength coaches and working out with the team, but some guys just don't need that," Suggs told Garceau and Jeremy Conn. "Some guys, it's better for them to work individually with a trainer. I've always worked out with a trainer, and it's worked out thus far for me pretty good. But some guys do feel as though they work better with the team, within the group.
"As far as the OTAs thing goes, a lot of guys get hurt. I don't think a lot of guys would like to take that risk. It's OTAs, we're not winning any games or any Super Bowls in OTAs, so I'd rather just stick to my training and be in top shape come training camp."
Interesting.
Suggs was not a part of the Ravens' minicamps last year because he was in the process of negotiating a long-term contract with the team. Coming off a shoulder injury, Suggs showed up to training camp out of shape, injured his heel early in camp, and ended up posting a career-low 4.5 sacks.
Asked about Suggs' absence at the end of OTAs earlier this month, head coach John Harbaugh opted not to criticize his three-time Pro Bowl linebacker/defensive end.
"We're not with him, so I can't vouch for anything he's doing or not doing," Harbaugh said. "I think Terrell's got a good heart. I think he's a hard worker. I think he's very motivated to having a great season.
"Him not being here through the OTAs...we'll just have to see. We'll just have to see how he comes back to training camp and how he does. But I would expect a very motivated Terrell Suggs in training camp."
