Last year, Ed Reed started training camp on the Active Physically Unable to Perform List (also known as the PUP List), which meant that he was unable to practice with his teammates until reinstated to normal status.
This year, Reed says he expects to be placed on the Reserve PUP List, meaning that he would be required to sit out the season's first six games.
"I'm going to be on the PUP list for a minute, and I'm not letting them take me off like they took me off last time without telling me," Reed said during an interview on 105.7 The Fan yesterday.
Reed had reconstructive hip surgery this offseason which has limited his ability to prepare for the start of the season. The Ravens' six-time Pro Bowl safety said a few weeks ago that he was at 35 percent and would likely miss some time at the start of the season.
Asked yesterday if he would be OK with going on Reserve PUP and missing the Ravens' first six contests of the year, Reed didn't hesitate.
"Of course," Reed said. "Definitely. I mean, it's going to be challenging. Opening up the season with the schedule we have, it's going to be challenging, whether I'm there or not. So, if that's the case, which it's really leaning that way more than anything, hopefully we weather the storm, which I think we will.
"We're a good enough team and have great players around to where we can get through those games and make a run in late November, December and January."
Reed said he would still put his health at about 35 percent. He says he has started to do some light agility work, but has experienced "some soreness and a little pain" in the hip.
Fans might not like the idea of Reed sitting out a large chunk of the season, but the 31-year-old said he's going to be sure that he's 100 percent healthy before making his way back into action.
"The way this business is, and dealing with the things I've just been through in the last two weeks with my organization, I'm not coming back till I'm well and ready," Reed said. "I don't care what anybody says, I don't care what anybody says about me. I know what I can do when it comes to football.
"I'm going to take my time with this and make sure that I'm more than ready."
