A surprise roster move

The Ravens have officially signed defensive back Brad Jones, but the guy who they let go to make room for Jones on the roster is a bit of a surprise.

That guy is Matt Katula, who had been the Ravens' long snapper for the last five seasons.

That leaves Morgan Cox, an undrafted rookie, as the only long snapper on the roster.

Cox handled all the long snaps in Thursday's preseason opener against the Panthers. No reason was given for Katula's lack of reps.

Katula is coming off a rough 2009 campaign in which he battled tendinitis in his elbow.

He struggled down the stretch, and had a few off-target snaps which likely contributed to missed field goals.

Katula insisted he was healthy this offseason and had been splitting reps with Cox in training camp.

We'll talk to head coach John Harbaugh after this afternoon's practice about what went into the decision.
