Rookie linebacker Sergio Kindle is "ahead of schedule" as he recovers from a fractured skull, head coach John Harbaugh said today.
Harbaugh said that Kindle, who fell down two flights of stairs in late July while at a friend's house, has been working out recently and is progressing well.
"I would say based on what I've been told, some of it's come from Sergio who is very optimistic, but also from the doctors, they say he's ahead of schedule," Harbaugh said. "He's really recovering very quickly, which is very encouraging."
As expected, Harbaugh said the Ravens plan to put Kindle on the reserve Physically Unable to Perform list to start the regular season, meaning he'll miss at least the first six games of the year.
While it still appears unlikely that Kindle will play this year, Harbaugh did not rule out the possibility of having the rookie suit up later in the season. He said the team will monitor Kindle's health and would consider activating the linebacker if he's healthy after his stint on PUP has ended.
"I think we have to evaluate it from there and see where we're at," Harbaugh said.
Kindle's next step will be traveling to the Baltimore area sometime by the end of next week to get checked out by a neurologist.
The Ravens' second-round pick will spend two or three days at a hospital facility and the team will get a chance to review his medical information and compare it to what they've been told by doctors at Kindle's hospital in Dallas
Harbaugh said that because Kindle has not yet been signed, the team will not be able to see him at their Owings Mills facility during his visit to Baltimore.
"From a football perspective, we're not allowed to see him at all," Harbaugh said. "He's not under contract. We've talked to the league about this. Ozzie [Newsome, Ravens GM] has worked this out; there are certain rules in place. We won't be able to see him here at the facility, but he'll be meeting with a neurologist."
