On Thursday, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said that while his first-team offense hadn't "clicked" last week against the Redskins, he was confident that the group was going to turn it on and hit its stride.
Cameron's a smart guy.
The Ravens came out tonight and absolutely dominated the Giants in the first half, putting up 243 total yards, running 46 plays, and scoring 17 points in the first 30 minutes, en route to a 24-10 win.
Cameron had quarterback Joe Flacco flinging the ball all over the field from the get-go. He opened the game with 13 straight designed passing plays, and intended to put the ball in the air on 19 of the Ravens' first 20 offensive plays from scrimmage.
"We came out wanting to throw the ball and to push the tempo, and that's what we did," center Matt Birk said. "It's important for us as an offensive line to make Joe feel comfortable. The tight ends, running backs and all our guys did the things we needed to do to be successful early on tonight."
Flacco led the Ravens to scores on three of their first four possessions, including touchdown passes to Anquan Boldin and Todd Heap.
"We had a good tempo going tonight, we got in a groove, and we were able to march the ball down the field," Flacco said. "I feel really good about how we were doing things."
Boldin's touchdown grab was his first in a Ravens jersey, and it came at the perfect point in the preseason. The third preseason game is the closest the starters come to regular season action, and they likely won't see much playing time next week in the preseason finale against the Rams.
"We're just starting to get comfortable with one another," Boldin said. "For us, we considered the half a real game, and we tried to pick it up a little bit and get in sync because this is truly the first dress rehearsal that we'll get before the regular season."
If you look at the total yardage and time of possession splits in the first half, you could actually argue that the Ravens should have been up by significantly more than 14 points at the half.
Flacco chooses to make that argument.
"It was a good showing, but I think the reality is that we left some points out there," Flacco said. "We probably could've put some more points up."
Maybe so, but I think most Ravens fans will take this performance out of their offense, especially considering that just a week ago, many were doubting what this group could accomplish.
