One might think that a player coming off a major injury would want to get some playing time in the preseason to test things out and see where he's at health-wise before the regular season starts.
Lardarius Webb does not agree with that theory.
The second-year cornerback, who is coming off surgery to repair a torn ACL suffered last December, said today that while he's recovering well, he does not want to play in the preseason for fear of injuring the knee further.
"I'm hoping it's not," Webb said, when asked if the preseason was a possibility for him. "For what? I'm still like seven months [out of the surgery]. We still have a lot of work to do. We have to make sure it's right before I come back on."
Webb looks like he's been coming along well lately, as he's spent parts of practice on a side field doing individual footwork and cutting drills. However, the Nicholls State product declined to give a timetable for his return.
"Not for ya'll," he said. "We're coming. We don't want everybody to know if I am coming back."
Webb said that he isn't feeling any pain at this point, just some soreness that comes after working out.
Despite not being able to practice with his teammates as he's stuck on the Physically Unable to Perform list, Webb seems pleased with his progress.
"I'm happy because I have put in everything I could possibly put in to it," Webb said. "Being here every day, working hard after practice, working it. I'm happy with where I am, because, hey, I'm pushing it as far as I can go."
