The news that Trevor Pryce had spurned the Ravens to sign with the Jets slowly swept through the Ravens locker room today, and some of Pryce's teammates chose to pay tribute to the departed defensive end during and after practice.
Safety Ed Reed wore Pryce's No. 90 jersey during the team's morning walkthrough, and on the white board in the Ravens' locker room, someone wrote: "RIP Trevor".
Pryce has left to head up north, where he'll join former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, linebacker Bart Scott, safety Jim Leonhard, and a number of other familiar faces from his time in Baltimore.
The veteran defensive end will be missed both on and off the field in Baltimore. Pryce was a respected presence in the Ravens' locker room, and was popular amongst his teammates.
"I definitely would want him in this locker room, but now he's over there with Rex daddy," linebacker Terrell Suggs said.
"I'm shocked," Suggs added. "I'm still waiting on a call from him. I called him a few unpleasantry words, just joking around. That's my man. He was like 'I'll call you later from the big city.' So, all the best."
Defensive tackle Kelly Gregg said that he got word from Pryce last night that he would be leaving the Ravens and joining Rex and the Jets.
"I talked to him last night and he's definitely excited," Gregg said. "It's just one of those things. I was wishing he would come back here. He wants to play every game and he gets to play this weekend against Buffalo. It will be a lot of fun for him and Rex."
As a vested veteran, Pryce will earn his entire $2 million base salary from the Ravens, and he'll now also earn a paycheck from the Jets.
Getting paid by two teams at once. Not too shabby.
Asked about Pryce's departure immediately after the morning walkthrough, defensive coordinator Greg Mattison said he was unaware of the news.
"I haven't heard that," Mattison said. "I didn't hear...but if that is true, we loved having him here, and he was a tremendous addition in our meeting room. We wish him the best of luck."
