The Panthers have named a starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Ravens.
It isn't rookie Jimmy Clausen, who has started four games this year but suffered a concussion last week against the Buccaneers.
It isn't Tony Pike, the Panthers' other rookie QB, who Carolina selected in the sixth round of this year's draft.
It isn't wide receiver Armanti Edwards, a third rookie, who played quarterback at Appalachian State (where he beat Joe Flacco and the Delaware Blue Hens in the 1-AA Championship game in 2007) and was the Pathers' third QB last week at Tampa Bay.
Carolina is instead turning to journeyman Brian St. Pierre, a guy who has been with the team for exactly eight days and has thrown a total of five NFL passes.
The Panthers signed St. Pierre to their practice squad a little over a week ago. Three days ago, the 30-year-old was added to their active roster. Now, on Sunday, he'll make his first NFL start and will line up across from Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
Should be interesting.
St. Pierre spent the entire 2005 season here in Baltimore as a member of the Ravens' practice squad, so some around the building remember what he brings to the table. Tight end Todd Heap is one of those guys.
"Great guy, great quarterback," Heap said of St. Pierre. "We've seen him play over the years. He's a guy that we kind of know what he's capable of. We've seen what he can do, his arm strength. He's a smart guy, we know that about him.
"Our defense hopefully will be ready for that, and a lot of guys on that side of the ball know Brian St. Pierre and know what type of quarterback he is."
St. Pierre also was with the Ravens throughout OTAs and training camp in 2006, which was safety Dawan Landry's rookie year.
"I don't remember him too much," Landry said. "He's a veteran guy. So, at least he's been around the league. You can't take anybody lightly, not at all. He's a veteran guy. I'm sure he knows their offense. We'll prepare the same way we always prepare."
A reporter then informed Landry that St. Pierre had only recently joined the Panthers.
"Oh, he just got there this week, too? Wow," Landry said. "At least he's a veteran guy. He just got there, so hopefully we can take advantage of that."
