After having over a week to stew on what he calls the worst performance of his NFL career, cornerback Fabian Washington was back on the practice field today trying to put last Sunday's outing against the Bills behind him.
It wasn't easy, but the Ravens' sixth-year cornerback says he's moved on from a performance in which he allowed three touchdowns to Buffalo wide receiver Lee Evans and was benched in favor of Josh Wilson.
"I watched the film like three times and was disgusted at myself," Washington said. "My technique was out of whack the whole game. I know what I did wrong, that's the good thing. If you know what you're doing wrong, you can always correct it."
Washington admitted that it took a few days to recover from his poor game and the benching, but said that his bye week trip back home to Florida helped him get away from the game and return to Ravens headquarters today energized and ready to bounce back.
"The bye week was refreshing," Washington said. "Got a chance to talk to my DB coach, coach Chuck [Pagano]. We seen what was going on. Got a chance to talk to coach Harbs [John Harbaugh]. We know what was going on. And I got a chance later on in the week to just forget about football, which I think I needed, because after a performance like that, man, I never felt that bad in my life.
"The only good thing about the whole situation was that we won. It's easier to get over when you win the ballgame. But I've never had a performance like that in my life. It was hard to get over, but I'd say by mid-week, I was over it, and I just got away from football completely."
As a result, Washington says he was back to the guy he normally is on the practice field and in the locker room - a loose jokester who has fun being around the game and his teammates.
"I got back to just doing what I do - just play and have fun," Washington said. "Not to say that I came into the Buffalo game not having fun, but when you're getting beat to sleep, it's kind of hard to have fun.
"I just got back laughing, playing, joking around, being me, instead of walking around uptight. I don't stress about a lot, but that one hurt a lot, because I don't think that team should have even been in the ballgame with us, and if I make just a couple plays, the game isn't close."
The question now is whether Washington will have his starting job back this Sunday against the Dolphins. Washington declined to say whether he has been told he'll be in the starting lineup against Miami ("We've got some good corners, so we're all going to play," he said), but did say that he got reps with the first-team defense during practice today.
"I always work in with the ones," Washington said. "We'll see what happens Sunday, but I always work in with the ones."
Regardless, Washington is looking forward to getting a chance to bounce back from last Sunday's effort.
"I can't wait for Sunday to get around," he said. "We're the one sport where it takes awhile to get the next game. Basketball, baseball, hockey, you play the next night. Football, it sits for a while, and it actually sit for two weeks with me. So, I can't wait to play."
