Well, whaddaya know? Rex Ryan is predicting the Jets are going to win the Super Bowl.
Again.
Never lacking for confidence, Ryan stepped to the podium at the combine in Indianapolis yesterday, and guaranteed his team would be the last team standing next season. Just like he did two years ago, and all of last season as well. At least he's consistent.
The combine officially kicked off yesterday, as offensive linemen and specialists took part in interviews and media sessions, but the actual Underwear Olympics will start today. As we get into the workouts, here are eight guys that I'll be keeping an eye on throughout the weekend:
A.J. Green, WR, Georgia, 6-foot-3, 212 lbs.
I loved watching Green play this season at Georgia, and I can't wait to watch the big, speedy wide receiver put on a show in Indy. He'll be long gone by the time the Ravens are on the clock at No. 26, but just sit back and enjoy his workout this weekend. Green will be the next star wide receiver in the NFL, and he's certain to light it up at the combine.
Mike Pouncey, G/C, Florida, 6-foot-5, 315 lbs.
Pouncey's got good bloodlines, that's for sure. His twin brother Maurkice (also a center) made a Pro Bowl this year in his rookie season with the Steelers, which will definitely boost Mike's stock. Mike could be a nice fit with the Ravens, not just because he'd counter Pittsburgh's Pouncey with one here in Baltimore, but because he can play both guard and center, and could slot in Baltimore's center of the future once Matt Birk retires.
Dontay Moch, DE/OLB, Nevada, 6-foot-1, 245 lbs.
All this kid did in college was produce. Moch posted 26 total sacks his last three years at Nevada, and while he'll have to transition from a defensive end to an outside linebacker at the next level, he has the athleticism to do it. A freak athlete who also ran track, Moch has ridiculous speed and is expected to run around a 4.2 40-yard-dash at the combine. He could be an option for the Ravens around the third round, but the real reason he's on this list is because I can't wait to see what time he posts in the 40.
Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland, 6-foot-0, 202 lbs.
How fast can the local boy run? We've talked about the Ravens possibly being interested in Smith late in the first round, but if the Maryland product runs well (he could be the fastest wideout at the Combine) and shows nice hands, he could jump up into mid-first-round territory. As such, Ravens fans who want Smith to end up in purple and black might be hoping for him to post a mediocre combine.
Pat Devlin, QB, Delaware, 6-foot-3, 256 lbs.
I'm going to be selfish here, and put Devlin in just because I want to see my fellow Blue Hen get some pub. Hey, my blog, my rules. Actually, if the Ravens are interested in taking a developmental quarterback in the fourth- or fifth-round range, Devlin could be an option. Devlin and Joe Flacco actually have a decent amount in common - they both transferred to UD from big Pennsylvania schools (Penn State for Devlin), and took Delaware to a national championship game their senior year. Devlin doesn't have the size, arm strength or ceiling that Flacco does, but he's smart, accurate, and could become a solid backup.
Aaron Williams, DB, Texas, 6-foot-1, 192 lbs.
Can Williams slot in as the third cornerback taken behind Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara? The combine might decide that. Williams has great size, but doesn't play as physically as his size might suggest, and didn't produce big plays at the collegiate level, posting just four interceptions in his three years at Texas. Some mock drafts have Williams going to the Ravens at 26, but he'd need to have a strong combine to sell me on talk he should go that high.
Benjamin Ijalana, OT, Villanova, 6-foot-3, 317 lbs.
Another small-school, FCS prospect, Ijalana could be either a tackle or guard in the NFL. This is a deep draft at the tackle position, but if the Ravens want to look to improve their offensive line in the first round, Ijalana could be a guy they'd target. He's proven to play with a physical nature when in peak shape, but his stamina is a bit of a concern. That will be tested at the combine.
Tandon Doss, WR, Indiana, 6-foot-3, 205 lbs.
I could toss out another big-name wideout projected to go early on Day One of the draft, but instead, I'll go with a guy a little more under the radar. Doss has prototypical size, a good burst, can stretch the field vertically and scouts rave about his intangibles and character. He's garnered a decent amount of attention lately, and could work into the second round if he shows well in Indy.
