In the fourth round, the Ravens selected Gino Gradkowski from Delaware. He's a guard/center and the younger brother of quarterback Bruce Gradkowski.

Gradkowski is a 6-foot-2 , 300-pounder that will get a chance to learn under Matt Birk.

The Ravens finally ended their run on offense with their second pick in the fourth round when they selected safety Christian Thompson.
Thompson is out of South Carolina State. He will add depth to a position that was depleted with the departures of Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura in free agency.

The Ravens then shored up their return game and added to their defense with cornerback Asa Jackson in the fifth round.

In the sixth round, the Ravens addressed wide receiver by drafting Tommy Streeter. The Miami (FL) product is 6-foot-5 and weighs 219 pounds. He will compete for the third receiver role behind Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith.

The Ravens' final selection was defensive lineman DeAngelo Tyson out of Georgia. Tyson will fill a need where the Ravens lost Brandon McKinney and Cory Redding to free agency.
...

Boller, a former first-round pick of the Ravens in 2003, hasn't played for the franchise since 2007.

Boller was set to be quarterback of the team in 2008, but suffered a shoulder injury and the Ravens placed him on injured reserve.

Last night, the Ravens released their 2012 schedule. After taking some time to think about it, it looks like the Ravens will have another tough road ahead of them if they're going to make the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season.

If the Ravens are going to make some noise, logic would say it's going to be at the beginning and end of the season with some mid-season struggles to be expected. That may not be the case though.

The Ravens do open with three of their first four games at home, with all three in primetime. The problem is all three of those games are against teams that have the potential to give them fits.

During opening week, the Ravens will play the Bengals on Monday, Sept. 10. The Bengals are a tough out, even though the Ravens swept them, along with the rest of the division, last season. Quarterback Andy Dalton and wide receiver A.J. Green will be one more year experienced and their young defense from a season ago should be better, as well.

The next two home games will come against the Patriots on Sept. 23, who, at this point, may just be in the Ravens' heads after beating them in the AFC championship game, and another division rival, the Browns on Thursday, Sept. 27. Each of these teams has the potential to give the Ravens fits.

In between, the Ravens will take on coach John Harbaugh's former team, the Eagles on Sept. 16, in their only afternoon game in the month of September.

October and November is where the schedule starts to get dicey. The Ravens only have a single home game in each of those two months, but they also get their bye week right at the end of October.

During October, the Ravens will travel to face the Chiefs on Oct. 7, and Texans on Oct. 21, while facing the Cowboys at home on Oct. 14, in between. The game against the Texans could be a game that helps or hurts playoff seeding.

November could prove to be the pivotal month of the season for the Ravens. To kick off the month, the Ravens have their second game against the Browns on Nov. 4, come home for the Raiders on Nov. 11, who now employ longtime nemesis quarterback Carson Palmer, then travel to Pittsburgh on Nov. 18 for a night game and to San Diego on Nov. 25.

Three of the Ravens' last five games will be at home. They will open their stretch run schedule against the arch-rivals Steelers on Dec. 2. Yes, that's the Steelers for a second time in a three-week period. They will face, what could be, a dynamic offensive football team in the Redskins on Dec. 9, before closing out their home schedule against the Manning brothers, Peyton first on Dec. 16 and then Eli on Dec. 23. The schedule will close, once again, in Cincinnati on Dec. 30.

Can the Ravens make the playoffs again? Absolutely. It will not be a cake walk, though.
...

Webb was a restricted free agent and the Ravens had given him a first-round restricted tender worth about $2.7 million.

The cornerback will be heading into his fourth season after being drafted in the third round of the 2009 draft.

Last season, his first as a full-time starter, Webb led the Ravens in interceptions with five, including a touchdown against the Jets in Week 4. He recorded 67 tackles.

In the playoffs, Webb recorded three interceptions, including two against Tom Brady of the Patriots, which led the team.

One thing is for sure - the Ravens like to trade in the draft.

This year, the Ravens have the 29th pick in the first round. It's not totally clear what the Ravens will do with that pick, but Newsome said today the team will be ready with multiple scenarios.

"Each year before the draft starts, (director of player personnel) Eric (DeCosta) and (vice president of football administration) Pat (Moriarty) put together draft scenarios, trade scenarios," Newsome said. "Trading up four or five spots, maybe as much as 10 spots, and then trading back as far as 10 spots. It's already prepared for us. We make calls to teams ahead of us and behind us to alert them that we have the potential to move. That happens every year."

That sounds like a pretty strong endorsement for being ready for anything during the hectic moments of the draft.

However, the Ravens will be prepared if a trade opportunity doesn't come their way.

"At 29, I think the best way to start off is you'd have to have 29 players because you can't control the other 28," Newsome said. "So if you're on the clock, and the other 28 players have been taken, you have to be."

If that's the case, which positions are the Ravens looking at with that pick?

Newsome reiterated the Ravens are looking for offensive linemen, wide receivers, pass rushers and a strong-side linebacker.

As far as linemen go, DeCosta singled out guard David DeCastro from Stanford, guard Eric Zeitler from Wisconsin, center/guard Peter Konz from Wisconsin and swing lineman Cordy Glenn from Georgia.

The wait begins to see how this draft will play out for the Ravens.
...

Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice hasn't made it a secret that he wants a long-term contract from the Ravens. What isn't known is if Rice will hold out from offseason activities.

Rice, according to The Baltimore Sun, said he has outplayed his contract. The big question, though, is do the Ravens agree?

"Well, that was a rookie contract, so, yes. I think, I like to think, that every player, with the Ravens, that we draft, hopefully outplays their first contract. So yes, he has," general manager Ozzie Newsome said at the team's pre-draft luncheon.

The Ravens are currently negotiating with Rice to get a deal done long term, but Rice's value is something that can be questioned considering the NFL has shifted to more of a passing league.

Rice, according to a February report on ProFootballTalk.com, wants Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson money, which was $100 million over seven years. However, it doesn't sound like the Ravens are willing to give Rice that kind of deal.

"Well, we're happy with the progress we're making with negotiations, but to say that from where he was to where we've put the franchise tag on him, that's a significant increase," Newsome said.

Rice was the most productive player on the Ravens' offense last season, but it's difficult to project how running backs will do year to year because of the nature of the position.

It's obvious the Ravens would like to sign Rice at some point this offseason. Hopefully, that time comes before training camp.

One incentive for the Ravens to get a deal done would be to free up salary cap space. The Ravens, at the moment, are reportedly tight against the cap and one way to free up cap space would be to sign Rice, or some of the Ravens' other players, to a long-term contract.

"Well, we have ongoing talks with all four," Newsome said, referring to Rice, quarterback Joe Flacco and cornerbacks Lardarius Webb and Cary Williams. "And just as I stated earlier, we have ways, if there's a good player, you know, whether we get a deal done with Joe (Flacco) or Lardarius (Webb) or Ray, we have ways of being able to get that player.

"The reason why we want to get the long-term deals done with those players is because we like them and we want them to be in Baltimore a long time because they have been very helpful for us to get us to this point and they're going to be helpful for us to take the next step."

Williams said on a radio show that he would consider unretiring if he could play with the Chargers. That report comes from ESPN 103.1 FM in San Diego. This is according to <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Zone_Madani/status/185112914628325376"target="_new">this tweet from the station's program director, Jon Madani.

Williams informed the Ravens he was retiring way back on Feb. 7. Apparently, if it's with the Chargers, he'd have a change of heart.

Last season, Williams had 108 carries for 444 yards and two touchdowns while he served as Ray Rice's backup.

According to <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/breaking/chi-bears-corey-graham-sign-ravens-20120323,0,1240580.story"target="_new">this report in the Chicago Tribune, the Ravens signed special teams ace Corey Graham to a two-year deal. Formerly of the Bears, Graham was a Pro Bowler last season. The Ravens later confirmed the deal in a press release.

Graham is also a defensive back, but it appears the Ravens wanted him for his special teams prowess. On the depth chart, he will more than likely be the fourth cornerback.

Graham was originally drafted by the Bears in the fifth round of the 2007 draft.

According to multiple reports, the Ravens also agreed to re-sign linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo. The 35-year-old has spent the past four seasons with the Ravens after spending time with Miami and, you guessed it, the Bears. The team also confirmed Ayanbadejo signed a three-year contract to remain with the Ravens.

Ayanbadejo is a three-time Pro Bowl selection.

In another move to improve special teams, the Ravens signed journeyman safety Sean Considine.

Let's take a minute and catch up on the Ravens since free agency started March 13.

The Ravens have lost five players. Those players are safeties Haruki Nakamura and Tom Zbikowski, left guard Ben Grubbs, defensive end Cory Redding and outside linebacker Jarret Johnson. They've re-signed one player, center Matt Birk, and were spurned by another, guard Evan Mathis.

Grubbs leaving is the biggest blow to a team that needs offensive line help. His loss was felt during the season when he missed six games with a turf toe injury. To make matters worse along the offensive line, Mathis, the Ravens' backup plan, decided to re-up with his old team, the Eagles.

Where does that leave the Ravens? They've got a few options. In their State of the Ravens address last month, the team's brass suggested moving 2011 third-round pick Jah Reid, a backup tackle, to left guard. The other two options are signing someone in free agency, as they tried with Mathis, or drafting a player. At the moment, that player could be Wisconsin's Peter Konz.

Konz, regarded as the draft's top center, could play guard for a season or two while learning under Birk before taking over for the 15-year veteran.

The second need for the Ravens will be safety. With Zbikowski and Nakamura leaving for the Colts and Panthers, respectively, the Ravens have Ed Reed, Bernard Pollard and special teamer Emanuel Cook on the roster at safety.

The Ravens may find an answer for safety depth in the draft or for a bargain price on the free agent market.

Redding and Johnson may be the two most replaceable Ravens. Redding, who signed a three-year contract with the Colts, can be replaced by Pernell McPhee and Art Jones. Both players emerged during the 2011 season as pass-rushing threats.

Johnson, a gritty player, signed with the Chargers. The nine-year veteran is a good outside linebacker who can set the edge on running plays. Johnson will most likely be replaced by third-year linebacker Paul Kruger.

The Ravens' only free agent that has re-signed is Birk, who agreed to a three-year deal with the Ravens on Friday. The center has started 48 straight games with the Ravens and 96 consecutive overall. He was named the 2011 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year.
...

In my four years covering the Ravens, I've seen Terrell Suggs perform countless quirky and ridiculous acts (links attached to each individual word), learned why it's best to approach Bernard Pollard for an interview at least five minutes prior to shower time and had Troy Smith challenge me to a dance-off.

Buy me a drink and I'll tell you all about that last incident.

I've watched Ray Lewis perform his "Hot in Herre" dance from the press box over 30 times (and while some might scoff at all the gyrating, I still get a kick out of it), seen Ray Rice and Joe Flacco go from wide-eyed rookies to big-time performers and covered two AFC championship games.

And now, I'll be moving on to the next step in my career, one hopefully filled with as many positive memories as my last.

I'm very excited to officially announce that I've been hired as MASNsports.com's Washington Nationals beat writer, and in a couple hours, I'll be heading down to Viera, Fla. to cover Nats spring training and begin a new journey.

This is going to be a big transition for me, largely because I thoroughly enjoyed my last four seasons with the Ravens, but it's a challenge that I'm truly excited for.

I've got a number of people to thank for all that they've done for me over the last four seasons, starting with my bosses at MASN for giving a young guy new to the business a chance to have my own beat and allowing me the flexibility to take this blog in any direction I wanted. They allowed me to make this space my own, and I really appreciate their trust in that regard.

I'd also like to thank the Ravens' excellent PR staff for their help in my time covering the team, as well as all of the players, coaches, members of the organization and fellow reporters that have helped make this such a fun experience.

But most importantly, I'd like to thank you, the Ravens fans who have read my blog here on MASNsports.com, interacted with me <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/dankolko"target=_new">on Twitter or gotten to know me at any point along the way. These four years have been a blast, partly because of the Ravens' success, but mostly because I've genuinely enjoyed the rapport with everyone across all of the platforms that I've been fortunate enough to grace.

While I might now be covering a different team that plays a different sport in a different city, in some ways, things won't change all that much.

You'll still be able to find me on MASNsports.com (and on the front page now) and you can catch me making on-air appearances on MASN during the Nats' pre and postgame shows.

I hope many of you will continue to follow my work on MASN and interact with me both in the comments section of my new blog and on Twitter. Believe me when I say that I'll be keeping up on all things Ravens, and will be happy to continue talking about the team even now that I won't be around Owings Mills quite as much.

My main goal, however, will be getting my feet wet at Nats camp the next couple weeks before my new Nats blog officially launches March 13.

It should be a fun ride. Hope to see some of you along the way.
...

I have no specific information to back this up, but I'm guessing that when the Ravens' season ended in January, team officials expected center Matt Birk to opt for retirement.

Birk is now 35 years old, his contract with the Ravens expired after the 2011 campaign and he's dealt with knee trouble over the last few years. He had said that retirement this offseason was an option, and this seemed like a decent time for him to step away from football and spend more time with his family, which now includes a whopping six children.

But after thinking things over for the last few weeks, Birk now says he wants to return. According to reports, the veteran center's agent has informed the Ravens that Birk is open to playing again in 2012, and apparently, the Ravens have interest in bringing the six-time Pro Bowler back.

Assuming the two sides are able to reach an agreement on a contract, Birk's presence will help the Ravens fill one of their larger voids this offseason.

If Birk and left guard Ben Grubbs (who is expected to leave via free agency) both were to depart, the Ravens would have needed to put a lot of focus on upgrading the interior of the offensive line through the draft and free agency over the next few months. Should Birk return, that need isn't as dramatic.

Would Birk remain in the starting lineup? Would the 14-year veteran serve as a backup and mentor for a younger player?

That depends how the Ravens choose to approach the position. But if they bring Birk back into the fold, they'll have far more options than they would if he had chosen to retire.
...

Terrell Suggs has never been shy about expressing his distaste for the hype that surrounds Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

Not that the Ravens linebacker is ever shy about expressing his distaste for anything, really.

In the past, most Suggs' comments about Tebow have been largely sarcastic, like the time that Suggs said he wasn't going to worry about talk of him winning Defensive Player of the Year, and would instead "leave it in God's hands, leave it in Tebow's hands," - a reference to Tebow's religiousness.

But in a GQ article titled "The Year of Magical Stinking: An Oral History of Tebow Time," this more aggressive quote from the middle of the season (following the Broncos' Week 8 loss to the Lions) is attributed to Suggs: "They say we were giving him a hard time because he's a Christian. No, that's not it! We were giving him a hard time because he was terrible."

That's the non-Brady Quinn quote from the GQ piece which will generate the bulk of the headlines, but there are other reactions from Suggs throughout the story which demonstrate the rollercoaster that we all went through while watching Tebow last season.

I think instead of just singling out that one Suggs quote, it's important (and fair) to show them all.

From Weeks 15-17, when the Broncos lost three straight games: "I mean, it's an insult to us players. You know, wins are hard to come by in this league, and if I was Denver's defense, I would feel a certain way - they're not allowed to (say it), 'cause they're all on one team, but people are making it look like Tim Tebow is the kid from Foxboro - which, that couldn't be more opposite. It's just crazy that we're calling him a phenomenon when basically he's mediocre. Cam Newton's a way better quarterback than Tim Tebow, and we don't have a Cam Newton phenomenon."

Entering the Broncos' wild card playoff game against Pittsburgh: "If he wins the playoff game, I'll be very surprised. And I'll get off him. And I'll say, 'I don't know what it is about him, but he does know how to win.' But until he wins the playoff game, I'm not a believer."

Following Denver's overtime playoff win over the Steelers: "I'm shocked. Jaw is on the floor! He shocked us all."

The Ravens will host the Broncos this upcoming season, and it will be interesting to see what Suggs has to say about Tebow prior to that matchup.

That's assuming, of course, that Tebow is still Denver's starting quarterback when the two teams face off.
...

The Ravens' offseason pursuits of offensive linemen, linebackers and wide receivers will occupy a lot of our attention over these next couple months. There are clear holes at those spots and general manager Ozzie Newsome has indicated that when it comes to upgrading the roster, those positions will be his priorities.

But there's one situation flying somewhat under the radar on the Ravens' offseason to-do list which the team will need to address one way or another this offseason, and that's the safety spot.

Assuming Ed Reed does, in fact, return for the 2012 season (again, he's yet to make that declaration either publicly or to team officials), the Ravens will have their starting safety duo in place.

Strong safety Bernard Pollard played well in 2011, and almost certainly earned both the $500,000 roster bonus he's duo on March 23 as well as the $1.25 million he's owed for the 2012 season. Pollard was a solid free agent pickup by Newsome last offseason and his talents mix well with those of Reed.

But both Reed and Pollard are set to become free agents after this upcoming season. Making the safety situation even more pressing, however, is that the Ravens' top two reserve safeties - Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura - are both unrestricted free agents this offseason.

Zbikowski, a third-round pick in 2008, started 14 games for the Ravens over the last three seasons, including the first four contests in 2011. The Notre Dame product was bumped from the starting lineup by Pollard a quarter of the way through the season, however, and saw almost all his action on special teams the rest of the way out.

Nakamura, a sixth-round pick in '08, has become a valuable special teams player here in Baltimore, and he often worked his way on the field on defense as a dime back in passing situations.

Neither guy has potential to replace Reed or Pollard and play at an All-Pro level, but both have shown they can step in in a pinch and hold down the fort, so to speak.

The Ravens don't have to make any decisions on their starting safeties at the moment, assuming Reed is willing to play another season. But they will need to decide how they want to manage their depth at the position.

If the Ravens feel that either Zbikowski or Nakamura are capable of handling one of the two starting safety jobs in 2013, they'll need to pay up to ensure they have that guy on the roster this year. If they feel one or both are valuable enough as special teams players and insurance behind Reed/Pollard, again, they'll need to prove it in contract negotiations.

Or, if the Ravens are ready to go another direction, they'll have to draft or sign a couple safeties that can come in and lock down those backup jobs that Zbikowski and Nakamura have occupied these last four years. Two-year veteran Emanuel Cook will return next season and could be in play for one of those roles.

My guess is that Zbikowski would prefer to go somewhere where he can compete for a starting job, while Nakamura would be more receptive to returning to Charm City. Zbikowski has no ties to the Baltimore area (other than the tattoo of the downtown smokestacks on his side), while Nakamura likes the area and has a young family that he might prefer not to move.

Regardless, while the Ravens have bigger fish to fry over these next few months, the safety spots will need addressing as free agency and the draft approach, as well.
...

Welcome to the franchise tag period of the offseason. I know how intently you all have been waiting for this day.

This is a time (starting today and going until March 5) in which NFL teams can place the franchise tag on one of their own free agents, guaranteeing that player will remain with the team for at least the upcoming season.

The team can continue negotiating a long-term contract with the player after the franchise tag has been applied, but if one isn't reached prior to the league-imposed deadline early in the regular season, the player will have to play out the season under a one-year contract which pays him the average of the top-five highest-paid players at his position.

This conversation is relevant in Baltimore this year, obviously, because of Ray Rice, the Ravens' two-time Pro Bowl running back.

Rice is an unrestricted free agent this offseason after playing out his rookie contract, and while he's looking for a long-term deal from the Ravens, he's unlikely to get one prior to the March 5 deadline in which the tag must be applied.

Negotiations like these take time, as we all know, and the tag is not only a way for the Ravens to ensure that Rice will remain with the organization for 2012, but also a way for them to buy more time to negotiate with Rice's agent, Todd France.

That's worked out well for the organization in the past, as the Ravens have reached long-term deals with defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, linebacker Terrell Suggs and cornerback Chris McAlister after initially slapping the franchise tag on those players. (Both Suggs and McAlister got their long-term deals only after having the tag placed on them in back-to-back seasons, however.)

The Ravens want Rice around long-term, and Rice wants to be in Charm City for years to come. But if a Sports Illustrated report is accurate - one which states that Rice is looking for a contract similar to the seven-year deal worth up to $100 million that the Vikings reached with Adrian Peterson last September - then these talks might be going on for quite a while.
...

Former Raiders head coach and Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson has signed on to become an assistant coach with the Bengals.

But the guy who has been a QB coach, wide receivers coach, running backs coach and offensive coordinator at various points throughout his coaching career won't handle what you might think during his tenure in Cincinnati.

Jackson will work specifically with the Bengals' defensive backs and will also focus on special teams.

I'm sorry, what?

Jackson has special teams experience - albeit he most recently coached special teams all the way back in 1991 - but he's never worked on the defensive side of the ball before. Interesting to see him go from a head coaching gig to positional duties that he hadn't held previously.

It'll also be interesting to see what Jackson has in store for Joe Flacco, his former pupil, during the two times that the Ravens and Bengals will meet during the 2012 season.

And, as a Twitter follower sarcastically pointed out, wouldn't it be funny if Jackson was the player to be named later in the Carson Palmer trade?

One more thing that will be interesting (while I'm listing interesting things): the offseason Mike Wallace sweepstakes.

The Steelers wide receiver is a restricted free agent this offseason, and if Pittsburgh doesn't put the franchise tag on him, they risk losing the speedster. Wallace could be signed to an offer sheet by a team willing to give up its first round pick in April's draft (the likely compensation Pittsburgh would be owed) and with cash to spend, and if that deal is front-loaded, the cash-strapped Steelers might not be able to match it.

The Ravens might not come into play there because they don't have a ton of money to toss around with Joe Flacco and Ray Rice needing long-term deals, but you can bet they'd love to see Wallace leave the division if another team is willing to pay up.
...

Sometimes, it's not tough to tell whether an impending free agent will depart and sign with a new team.

The player might be set to make more money on the open market than his previous team is able to pay him (cough, cough, Ben Grubbs) or he might have underperformed his old contract and worn out his welcome with his prior organization.

Other times, however, the decision isn't so easy.

Take the Jarret Johnson situation, for example. Johnson has been one of the Ravens' most underrated, yet valuable, players the last handful of seasons. The outside linebacker is an absolute warrior, playing through numerous injuries and suiting up for 129 straight games, the longest streak in team history. He's a smart player who's comfortable in the Ravens' complex defensive scheme and is a key presence in the locker room.

But Johnson, who is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, will be 31 when the 2012 season begins, and his productivity has dropped off the last two years, as he's averaged just two sacks and 67 tackles per season since a strong 2009 campaign.

Johnson has said he hopes to return to Baltimore, but obviously, his future is dependent on whether the Ravens give him a contract offer he feels is acceptable and what type of offers he receives from other teams.

The Colts, for example, might swoop in and give Johnson a healthy deal to help new head coach Chuck Pagano install his defense in Indianapolis. That would make sense on a couple levels.

If you're the Ravens, not only do you need to balance budgetary concerns with Johnson, but also the makeup of the roster. You could opt to bring back a solid, veteran player, but one who might only have a couple years left in his NFL career, or you could decide it's time to move on and slot a younger, cheaper player in at Johnson's strongside linebacker spot.

That's where the decision becomes particularly tough. The money saved by letting Johnson walk could be spent to help add a new wide receiver or offensive lineman - positions the Ravens would love to upgrade.

Johnson's been a major part of what the Ravens have built during his nine seasons in Baltimore. The question now is whether he'll be around as the organization makes another push for a Lombardi Trophy.

And that's not an easy question for anyone - especially general manager Ozzie Newsome - to answer.
...

The Ravens announced they've hired Chris Hewitt as their assistant special teams coach and have promoted Matt Weiss to defensive assistant.

Hewitt has spent the last eight seasons as an assistant at Rutgers University, most recently serving as the Scarlet Knights' running backs coach from 2010-11. Hewitt also had stints coaching Rutgers' cornerbacks (2008-09), serving as the director of speed and skill development (2005-07) and working as a graduate assistant (2004).

Hewitt, who saw action in 39 games over three NFL seasons as a player, has personal ties to two of his new bosses. He played college ball at the University of Cincinnati from 1992-96, and was coached by Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and Ravens special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg, who both had a number of coaching roles with the Bearcats.

"I'm really excited about being in the NFL," Hewitt said in a statement. "It's a great opportunity to be working with coach Harbaugh. He is someone I've known for a long time. I look forward to helping this team and learning more - especially with this being the NFL and the highest level of coaching."

Now, Hewitt will work directly under Rosburg. The 37-year-old Hewitt will replace Marwan Maalouf, who served as the Ravens' assistant special teams coach the last four seasons before leaving to become the Colts' special teams coordinator.

"We believe Chris' maturity, work ethic and overall skill set will enhance our special teams units," Rosburg said. "He brings experience as a coach in a highly-competitive college program and also as a NFL player. Chris is very familiar with our organization, and his core values align well with those of our coaching staff."

Weiss, 28, had spent the last three seasons as the head coach's assistant, supporting Harbaugh with administrative duties while also working in a defensive quality control capacity. He also helped compile opposing scouting reports, worked closely with scout teams in practice and served as a liaison for in-game coach's challenges.
...

As the seemingly endless stream of mock drafts - yes, you sense some annoyance in those words - have started to trickle out over the last handful of weeks, one player has been linked to the Ravens perhaps more than any other.

That player is Arizona State inside linebacker Vontaze Burfict.

Burfict has become well known for his mean streak and pad-thumping hits, and would help fill a fairly major need for the Ravens, who would love to add young talent at the inside linebacker spots.

The Sun Devil has some character issues and he's been known to lose his temper at times on and off the field, leading to penalties and mistakes. But some believe that Baltimore would be a great place for Burfict to land because he could learn under his idol, Ray Lewis, and could benefit from the veteran presence in the locker room.

That's led some draft gurus to project Burfict to the Ravens with the 29th pick in April's draft.

One very respected draft analyst, however, isn't sold on Burfict's potential at the NFL level. And that's putting it nicely.

"I'm not a fan at all," NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said yesterday during a conference call. "I just watched a bunch of his tape the other day. I came away unimpressed. His instincts aren't good.

"He gets enveloped by bigger bodies and he runs around blocks. For a big, strong guy, he's nowhere near as strong at the point of attack as I thought he'd be. I don't see first round at all."

Ignoring Burfict, there don't appear to be many first-round options at inside linebacker in this year's class.

Boston College's Luke Kuechly is the consensus top inside 'backer coming out this year, but he'll be gone long before the Ravens are on the clock at No. 29. Alabama's Don't'a Hightower is an option, although a torn ACL in 2009 might cause some scouts to be wary of his long-term health.

Those interested in Burfict could still hope the Ravens will keep an eye on him on Day Two of the draft, but it appears the chances of the Arizona State product hearing his name called in the first round are growing slim.
...

Joe Flacco has said on more than a few occasions that he'd like to begin talks with the Ravens about a contract extension.

Apparently, he'll get his wish.

According to reports, the Ravens will meet with Flacco's agent, Joe Linta, at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis next week to discuss a long-term deal for the four-year veteran quarterback.

With Flacco still under contract for the 2012 season, however, the question is how hard the team will push to get a deal done.

These negotiations are a step in the right direction, but the step might not be all that large. General manager Ozzie Newsome and Pat Moriarty, the team's salary cap guru, will listen to what Linta has to say and might start to lay the groundwork for a deal, but these things don't come together overnight.

Long-term contracts, especially those involving franchise quarterbacks, take time and often begin with the two sides standing on opposite ends of the negotiating spectrum.

Linta probably views his client as worthy of being in the same class as Eli Manning and Philip Rivers (Manning got a seven-year, $106.9 million deal with $35 million guaranteed, while Rivers signed a seven-year, $98.25 million contract with $38.15 million guaranteed) while the Ravens might counter with a deal closer to the one signed by Kevin Kolb, who scored a six-year, $63.5 million contract with $21 million guaranteed.

It will be interesting to see how the Ravens attack the Flacco negotiations, especially given the situation surrounding running back Ray Rice, who is an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The Ravens will likely give both Flacco and Rice big-money deals at some point, but how will they time those deals?

Will they put the franchise tag on Rice this season and leave it there, giving the running back a one-year deal worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $8 million and allowing them to sign Flacco this year? Will they take care of Rice's long-term deal first and make Flacco wait until 2013? Will they be able to navigate the cap, enabling them to get both contracts done this season?

It's clear the team wants both Flacco and Rice around for years to come, but there are a lot of hurdles that need to be cleared before the team is able to lock up both players. These initial discussions with Flacco's representative are nice, and could also indicate to the quarterback's camp whether they can expect anything to get done prior to the start of the 2012 season.
...

I'm back from Vegas safe and sound ... and incredibly tired.

I came out perfectly even on my gambling for the trip, which in my mind goes down as a win. And now that I'm home, we can get back to business as the Ravens start to get into their offseason and decide how to go about improving their roster.

As the NFL draft approaches (and April 26-28 isn't too far around the corner), we'll discuss the Ravens' draft priorities and where they'll consider going with their first couple picks. The main areas they need to address at this point are at inside linebacker, the interior of the offensive line, defensive end/outside linebacker and wide receiver.

Traditionally, the Ravens draft based on a "best player available" strategy. They've had a ton of success sticking with that mentality over the years, taking the guy they feel is the most talented player left on the board when they're on the clock, as compared to the one who might best fit whatever needs they have at certain positions.

That's a large part of the reason why general manager Ozzie Newsome has churned out so many Pro Bowlers. When you trust your talent evaluators and think big-picture instead of getting influenced by short-term needs, you're more likely to hit big on prospects.

But given the makeup of the Ravens' roster at certain spots, will they need to compromise the "best player available" strategy to an extent this year?

As of right now, this is what the Ravens depth chart looks like at inside linebacker:

* A 36-year-old Ray Lewis (who will be 37 in May)
* Three-year veteran Dannell Ellerbe, who will almost certainly be brought back as a restricted free agent
* Two-year veteran Cody Glenn, who's played 19 career games and was signed as a free agent Jan. 27
* Albert McClellan, an outside 'backer who was forced inside in 2011 due to injuries
* Josh Bynes, who appeared in one game in 2011 and spent time on the practice squad

That's it. Starting weak-side linebacker Jameel McClain is an unrestricted free agent, as is veteran Brendon Ayanbadejo, and while Lewis will return, the 2012 season might be his last. When you look at what's behind the 11-time Pro Bowler, it's hard to find a guy currently on the roster capable of replacing Lewis once he steps away.

The Ravens don't have to panic and spend this year's first-round pick on an inside linebacker if there isn't one there, but it sure seems like they'll need to address that area at some point in the first three rounds or so.

Same deal when it comes to the interior of the Ravens' offensive line. With center Matt Birk contemplating retirement and left guard Ben Grubbs likely to depart via free agency, this is what's left on the Ravens' roster at the center and guard positions at this point:

* Pro Bowl right guard Marshal Yanda
* Practice squad center Cecil Newton
* Guard Howard Barbieri, who spent 2011 on the Texans' practice squad
* 2010 third-round pick Jah Reid, a tackle who could be moved to guard

Again, that's it. Birk might choose to come back for one more year, and if not, veteran center Andre Gurode could probably be re-signed at an inexpensive rate. But the Ravens will need to find a way to fill the holes on the interior of the line. That's especially true at the center spot, where Newsome needs to develop a guy the team can plug in for the next handful of seasons.

Of course, the Ravens can always address some of their needs through free agency, and I'm certainly not suggesting they completely adjust their typical draft strategy and just go inside linebacker, center/guard, wide receiver in the first three rounds this year. You don't mess with a system that's worked so effectively for so long.

But it will be interesting to see if the Ravens push the issue just a bit and look to fill some holes early in the draft. Given the current makeup of the roster, it might be something worth considering.
...

Last summer, the Ravens' April draftees had to sit around and wait as the NFL lockout got resolved.

Some of the players selected didn't have a full playbook to go over, and the ones that did had to try and figure out complex NFL schemes without coaches or veteran teammates around to walk them through it on a daily basis.

That certainly set those players back and hindered their development early in their rookie seasons.

But it wasn't just the rookies who suffered because of the lockout.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh has said he believes that a player makes his biggest leap between his first and second NFL seasons. It's during this time that the player can full embrace coaching, having settled into the team and gotten a basic understanding of the formations and plays that the team runs and what his responsibilities are in those sets.

That's why the offseason between a player's first and second years as a pro can often be huge in his development. With that in mind, you have to believe that the Ravens' crop of 2010 draft picks will benefit greatly from the minicamps and OTAs that they'll participate in this offseason.

"This (will be) really my first normal offseason," tight end Dennis Pitta said. "My first one was as a rookie, and it's always a little bit different. Last year, obviously, with the lockout, we weren't able to come at all. This year will be my first full offseason to go through the routine. It should be fun."

The OTAs will allow the players that are current contributors - guys like Pitta, fellow tight end Ed Dickson, nose tackle Terrence Cody and defensive tackle Arthur Jones - to spend more time with their position coaches and improve their technique.

It will also allow the 2010 draft picks that have yet to emerge - like top pick Sergio Kindle (assuming he returns) and sixth-round offensive tackle Ramon Harewood - to get a chance to show their stuff.

(2010 fifth-round pick David Reed will miss offseason workouts after tearing his ACL late in the 2011 season.)

We know this time will also be huge for the 2011 draft picks, who will be going through their first NFL offseason and will get an opportunity to grow. But the months to come could be equally as important for the guys who will be entering their third professional season.
...

Hello from Las Vegas, where the weather is warm, and ... well, I'll just stop there.

I'm here through the weekend for a buddy's bachelor party, but will still check in every now and then to publish a quick entry and check comments. This is actually my first Vegas trip, so I plan on spending minimal time around my laptop. I'm excited to see what the city holds outside of my hotel room.

Hopefully I'll return without needing to pawn my laptop for extra blackjack money, but I can't make any promises.

We've discussed how the Ravens are unlikely to retain wide receiver Lee Evans and cornerbacks Domonique Foxworth and Chris Carr given their current contract situations and cap figures for next season.

Evans' 2012 base salary is $3.2 million, his salary-cap number is $5.6 million and he's owed a $1 million roster bonus due March 18. That's obviously too much to hand over to a guy who missed seven games this season due to injury and made just four catches all year.

Foxworth is owed $5.6 million in 2012 in what will be the final year of the four-year, $27.2 million deal he signed in 2009. Carr still has three years left on the four-year, $14 million deal he inked last summer, but he appeared in just nine games this season and even when healthy, rarely saw time in the secondary.

Again, that's just too much for those two corners considering their standing on the depth chart at this point.

But while Evans, Foxworth and Carr will almost certainly not be brought back under their current contracts, I think it's important to point out that it doesn't necessarily mean they won't be back at all.

The Ravens could approach these players and talk about renegotiating their deals, which would free up cap space and lessen the amount of guaranteed money the team would need to pay out while also offering the veterans a chance to earn back playing time and position themselves for a raise in 2013. And there's a chance Evans, Foxworth or Carr might be receptive to such an offer.

In Evans' case, if the Ravens cut him loose, he's unlikely to find many suitors - if any - willing to give him a decent chunk of guaranteed money. Four regular season catches and a key drop in the playoffs won't inspire teams to come running to his agent offering big-money deals.

If the Ravens offer to restructure his deal, Evans could still earn the team's No. 3 wide receiver job in camp, and if he stays healthy, will certainly improve upon his 2011 season. He enjoyed his time in Baltimore and feels badly about how things ended in the postseason, and this would give him a chance to make good.

Meanwhile, from the Ravens' perspective, they're still invested in Evans, given that they traded away a fourth-round pick in order to acquire him.
