Juan for all & all for Juan

Interim manager Juan Samuel let Jake Arrieta pitch out of a sixth-inning jam, in part because he was responsible for putting the rookie in it by ordering two intentional walks.

"It never crossed my mind, getting him out of there," Samuel said. "I'm like, he's going to work his way out of this, so it never crossed my mind taking him out.

"I think you saw him pump his fist after getting that third out. He was pretty excited. I know it was a tough situation. We walked some hitters for him, loading the bases, but he made some pitches."

Samuel was just as adamant about going to his bullpen in the seventh.

"You have to be careful with these young pitchers, like we did with (Chris) Tillman," he said. "We would like to see him come out of the game on a positive note if we have a chance to. We did not want to bring him back out there after that inning."

It all worked out, though Will Ohman provided a few tense moments with back-to-back walks in the seventh. Ohman got two ground balls and a strikeout in the eighth.

David Hernandez worked the ninth for his first save - the fifth Oriole to record one this season.

Alfredo Simon is supposed to reclaim the closer's job once he returns, but Hernandez might get some save opportunities.

"The idea of having him close games at times I think is something we could do," Samuel said. "If Simon goes a couple days and he's not available, we could always go to Hernandez. We know he's done it, he's got the stuff. That's a good option for us."

Could Hernandez be a future closer?

"I think it's a little bit early," Samuel replied. "We'll see what our needs are and go from there and see how these guys progress in the roles they're in."

One last item: Samuel had a brief chat with Luke Scott in the dugout after Scott slammed his bat down and didn't run hard out of the box on a sixth-inning triple. Scott might have circled the bases with more hustle.

"It was not an argument back and forth," Samuel said. "Just letting those guys know, 'Hey, you probably could have gotten an inside-the-park.' I was kind of joking a little bit on Luke, 'If you would have not slammed your bat and run hard out of the box...'

"We were sending a couple messages there at the same time."
