SARASOTA, Fla. - Mark Reynolds has made two sensational plays at third base today, charging one ball and making a diving stop to his left on a sharp grounder.
Pedro Strop disposed of his three batters so quickly, he was allowed to face a fourth. He retired Wilson Betemit on a fly ball to center, Jones on a bouncer to the mound, Wieters on a fly ball to let and Reynolds on a slow roller toward third. Strop hustled over to field the ball and made an off-balance throw to first that was on the money.
Jason Hammel retired the side in order on 14 pitches in the top of the first inning, striking out Ryan Adams and Nick Johnson. Jake Arrieta struck out Betemit looking to end a perfect bottom of the first.
Matt Lindstrom gave up three straight hits in the second after striking out Taylor Teagarden. Joe Mahoney doubled and scored on Jai Miller’s single. Rule 5 pick Ryan Flaherty followed with a single before Josh Bell grounded into a double play.
Miller has two hits. John Hester threw him out trying to steal second base in the fifth inning.
