Showalter staying busy this month (spring training note)

Because so many fans wanted to know, I'll pass along that manager Buck Showalter's knee surgery was a success and he's rehabbing at home. No complications. No fun, either, if you've ever rehabbed a knee.

Here are a few more Showalter-related notes:

A week after being the honorary captain at a Ravens game, Showalter will appear on this season's first episode of "Basketball and Beyond with Coach K," co-hosted by Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and Dave Sims, at 7 p.m. Wednesday on Sirius/XM's Mad Dog Radio channel 86.

The show also will feature Louisville men's basketball coach Rick Pitino, whose Cardinals are one of the favorites to win the NCAA title in 2013.

Sims and Krzyzewski, college basketball's all-time winningest men's coach, cover the state of college basketball and much more. They'll be talking Orioles on Wednesday.

You can find more information and encore times at www.siriusxm.com.

Also, Showalter and his wife, Angela, have teamed up again with KidsPeace to host the third annual KidsPeace Trick-or-Trot 5K run/1M walk this Saturday, Oct. 27 in Canton. This family event is open to all ages and features Halloween activities in addition to the race.

The entry fee for individuals participating in the run is $35, which includes an Under Armour T-shirt for the first 400 registered runners. Families who plan to walk the one mile together will pay just $20 and are encouraged to dress in their favorite Halloween costumes. Pets also are invited. Foster families and children walk at no charge.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the race will start at 9 a.m. The course winds through the Canton and Patterson Park neighborhoods, beginning and ending at O'Donnell Square in Canton.

The three registered teams who raise the most money will be eligible to win gift certificates, a complimentary wine tasting, 2013 Orioles tickets and more. In addition, there will be prizes for top runners, age group winners and most creative Halloween costumes for adults, children and pets.

After the completion of the race, participants may join the Showalters and the Oriole Bird for light fare and activities in O'Donnell Square.

There also will be a pre-race party at O'Donnell Square on Friday, Oct. 26 from 5-8 p.m. Participants may pick up their race packets, listen to live music, enjoy a discounted dinner at one of the race sponsors' restaurants and browse the shops on the square.

KidsPeace is a private charity dedicated to serving the behavioral and mental health needs of children, families and communities. All proceeds from this event benefit KidsPeace Foster Care and Community Programs of Maryland.

Note: Dave May, who spent the first four years of a 12-year major league career with the Orioles, died Saturday in his native Delaware at 68. Check out this entry from MASNsports.com's Pete Kerzel on May.

Note: The Phillies released their tentative 2013 exhibition schedule, and it includes March 3 and 23 games against the Orioles in Sarasota and a March 17 game against the Orioles in Clearwater. The March 17 and 23 games are listed as 1:05 p.m. starts, and the March 3 game is TBA.

Plan accordingly.
