Orioles’ season comes to an end

NEW YORK - The Orioles’ first trip to the playoffs in 15 years has ended in Game 5 of the American League Division Series.

Left-hander CC Sabathia retired the side in order in the top of the ninth inning, and the Yankees held on to defeat the Orioles 3-1 before a non-sellout crowd of 47,081 at Yankee Stadium.

Adam Jones led off the inning by flying to left, making him 2-for-23 in the Division Series. Chris Davis struck out swinging and Matt Wieters bounced to the mound, setting off a Yankees celebration on the same spot.

Wieters jogged back to the dugout. Many players continued to lean against the railing.

It’s over, but what a ride.

The Orioles finish 2012 with 96 victories after going 69-93 last season.

The Yankees will host the Tigers Saturday in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. The Orioles will board a train later tonight for Baltimore.
