Gausman recalled, replaces Garcia on roster (updated)

Kevin Gausman is listed among the Orioles’ relievers for tonight’s game against the Indians. Freddy Garcia is no longer listed among the starters and said he has been put on waivers.

More accurately, he has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. However, Garcia apparently can decline the assignment and become a free agent, which appears to be his choice.

The Orioles haven’t made an announcement, but one is pending.

Gausman has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk and could make Friday night’s start against the Yankees at Camden Yards, which would have been Garcia’s turn.

Also, catcher Matt Wieters has been lowered to seventh in the order.

Single-A Frederick catcher Michael Ohlman has been named Carolina League Player of the Week for June 17-23. Ohlman recorded five hits and had four RBIs over the weekend in Frederick’s first series after the All-Star break.

Ohlman went 5-for-10 in the three-game set against Myrtle Beach, including two triples Friday and a home run on Saturday. He went 2-for-3 with an RBI on Sunday. Ohlman scored walked twice, scored five runs and posted a 1.200 OPS in the series.

The Orioles signed right-hander Casey Upperman and assigned him to Class A Delmarva. Right-hander Sander Beck went on the disabled list retroactive to June 20.

Upperman, 22, was pitching for the Normal CornBelters in the independent Frontier League. In eight appearances, he went 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA and four saves. He struck out 17 batters in 11 1/3 innings.

Upperman was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 47th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.
