Some post-game comments from Jason Berken and Nick Markakis after the O’s lost 6-3 to Oakland on Wednesday afternoon.
Jason Berken on his outing - “I didn’t feel like I had my best stuff, but I was able to make some pitches early in the game, but the big inning hurt me. For whatever reason, that’s something that has hurt me all year. If you look over my starts, I’ve often had one bad pitch or one bad inning. You try to limit it to one or two runs if you can and try to stay out of a five or six-run inning.”
Jason Berken - Did pitching out of a lot of jams today finally catch up to you? - “Having long innings doesn’t help. In the second inning I threw about 30 pitches. Getting out of those innings is the main thing. Try to stay away from deep counts and long innings.”
Nick Markakis - On getting thrown out at second base in the 7th inning. It was not a called double steal, but when Brian Roberts broke for third, Markakis went for second base - “I should have known better. I should have known they would throw to second. It’s tough to read how Brian steals, that’s why he’s one of the best in the game. I should have stayed put and gave Aubrey a chance to drive a run in there. I took a gamble and came up on the short end.
“That was my fault. I should have given Aubrey a chance.”
Nick Markakis - On O’s recent struggles with runners in scoring position - “It’s tough now. This game is not easy. Especially when you are in pressure situations. I think guys are pressing with runners in scoring position, even myself lately. Trying to scrounge up runs any way we can. We just need to relax and take the approach we always take.”
Nick Markakis - What can the O’s do to get the offense going? - “Just go up there and stay within yourself. Do what got you here. Don’t try to do anything out of the blue. Take good swings and hit good pitches. Hit the ball where it’s pitched.”
