Saturday night meltdown, pen gives it up again

Here are some postgame notes from the O’s latest loss on Saturday.

The raw numbers: The Orioles fall to 2-16 with Saturday’s 7-6 loss to Boston. They are 1-8 on a road trip that now has one game remaining.

The Orioles have lost ten in a row vs. Boston and are 2-21 vs. the Sox since 9-1-08. The Orioles have lost 15 of their last 16 games at Fenway Park.

The Orioles fall to 1-6 in one-run games and are 1-9 on the year in games decided by two runs or less.

He deserved much better: Brian Matusz gave up three runs over six innings and did not get a decision after the O’s bullpen gave up a a pair of three-run homers in the seventh.

This was the O’s 10th quality start of the season. But the bullpen has allowed 5 ER and two homers in four innings the last two nights.

Here are some hitting notes from a night where the O’s produced a season-best 17 hits:

Rhyne Hughes: Went 2 for 5 with an RBI in his Major League debut. He had singles in his first two big league at bats.

Adam Jones: Hit a solo homer in the 9th and is 3 for 10 with two homers in the series.

Nick Markakis: Is 7 for 12 with two doubles the last three games.

Luke Scott: Had a season-high three hits, going 3 for 5 to snap a 1 for 20 stretch. His three hits matched his total from his last eight games.

Miguel Tejada: Is 7 for 12 his last three games.

Matt Wieters: Is 11 for 30 during a seven-game hitting streak and 4 for 9 in the Boston series.

Ty Wigginton: Went 4 for 5 with a solo HR tonight. He has hit four homers the last eight games and six in the last 11 contests.

Sunday afternoon at 1:35, David Hernandez (0-3, 4.67) pitches for the Orioles vs. Tim Wakefield (0-1, 6.38). Hernandez went 1-2, 5.40 in four starts last year vs. Boston. The Orioles are 0-12 in Hernandez’s last dozen starts.

Wakefield is 15-13, 4.10 in 46 career games, 33 starts vs. the Orioles. The O’s are batting .246 in 237 career innings vs. the right-hander.

Pitching probables for the series vs. the Yankees:

Tuesday: Kevin Millwood (0-3, 3.38) vs. Phil Hughes (2-0, 2.19)
Wednesday: Jeremy Guthrie (0-2, 3.46) vs. CC Sabathia (2-1, 3.00)
Thursdsay: Brian Matusz (2-0, 4.38) vs. A.J. Burnett (2-0, 3.20)

In the minors Saturday, Jake Arrieta got the win with a super outing in Norfolk’s victory over Charlotte. He gave up just two hits in seven shutout innings and is now 2-0, 0.36. He fanned 11 on Saturday and has given up one earned run in 25 innings on the year.

Joel Guzman homered for the fourth straight game for Bowie, Xavier Avery had three hits and is now batting .407 for Frederick and Luis Bernardo and Tyler Stampone had 3 RBI each in Delmarva’s win over Hagerstown.
