Updates on Mummey and Klein with Joe Jordan (plus Aberdeen note)

The latest Orioles draft pick to agree to terms is fourth-round pick Trent Mummey, a lefty hitting outfielder from Auburn that was taken with the 118th overall selection.

Mummey is expected to take his physical in Baltimore on Monday and, if all goes well there as expected, he will then officially sign and soon after join the Aberdeen IronBirds.

A Baltimore Sun report said Mummey was signed to a $252,000 bonus.

"It was a slot signing," O's scouting director Joe Jordan said. "We feel good about it, I'm just glad we will get him out playing soon. He had a good spring, especially the second half of the season was really good, so we hope he can pick up where he left off."

Mummey missed the first 28 games of Auburn's season with an ankle injury, but then hit .366-17-54 in just 36 games. He was a first-team all SEC selection and a two-time all SEC defensive team pick. He is expected to play center field for the IronBirds.

The O's and first-round pick Manny Machado have not begun negotiations yet. The O's took the prep shortstop with the third overall pick.

"No news. We are staying in contact with him. He will be playing some this summer and we will monitor that. He's playing tomorrow in Tampa and we'll be there watching.

"It's going to take some time and we know that," Jordan said.

The Orioles drafted three players from UCLA which begins play tonight at 7 p.m. vs. Florida in the College World Series.

This will delay contract talks with those players, but when UCLA's season ends, the O's feel they can quickly sign their third-round pick, pitcher Dan Klein.

"We are not going to mess with the players while they are playing. (O's scout) Gil Kubski has spoken with Dan and the other players on that club (the other two the O's drafted). I think everyone has a pretty good sense of what is going to happen when they are finished playing. I don't expect it to be a long, drawn out thing once they are through.

"I expect it to (go fast with Klein). Based on the information we received from the player before the draft, we can get him out to play.

"He's not going to have a tremendous amount of innings once his season is over with, but it's important for me that we do get him out and he does pitch this summer, which we will. We feel like he's an advanced guy and if we can get his feet wet and get him oriented to our way of doing things this summer, it's going to help him next year and the year after."

A right-hander, Klein has pitched in late relief for UCLA this season, going 6-0, 1.93 with nine saves. Over 46 2/3 innings, he has allowed 37 hits with nine walks and 50 strikeouts. He is expected to pitch as a starter in the O's minor leagues.

O's fans can watch his team play on ESPN and its other networks in the College World Series. The O's also drafted UCLA lefty pitcher Matthew Drummond in round 20 and outfielder Blair Dunlap in round 43.

Coming later today: More comments from Joe Jordan about Trent Mummey.

The Aberdeen IronBirds today added RHP Randy Henry who had been on Delmarva's disabled list. OF Lance West was released. I guess I got that story in on West and improving his sight just in time. Sorry to hear this news and I wish him well.

Henry was the Orioles fourth-round pick last summer. The 20-year-old righty was 1-1, 5.64 for Delmarva in ten games in relief and last pitched on May 21st. In 22 1/3 innings with the Shorebirds he walked five and struck out 30 batters.
