Who would have thought that it would be August 28th this year before Kevin Millwood got his first win of the season vs. an American League team?
But he beat the Los Angeles Angels tonight for his third win. He is 2-1 in four starts vs. the National League this year and was 0-13, 5.36 in 21 starts vs. AL clubs.
But Millwood allowed six hits over eight innings as the O’s beat the Angels 5-0 and they’ve taken the first two in this series.
Millwood is now 3-14, 5.34. He walked just one and fanned five and threw 110 pitches. Over his last five starts, Millwood has an ERA of 2.83.
Jim Johnson, making his first O’s appearance since April 30th, pitched a scoreless ninth as the O’s recorded their fourth shutout of the season and their third over the last 15 games.
With the win, the O’s clinched a winning month of August at 15-11. It’s their first winning month since going 15-12 in June of 2008 and their first winning August since 1997.
Josh Bell hit his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to right center, to give the O’s a 2-0 lead in the fifth. It scored Cesar Izturis, who had reached on an infield single.
Bell now has three homers batting right-handed in 31 at bats after hitting just one from the right side in 80 Triple-A at bats.
Izturis and Jake Fox had RBI singles in the 6th for a 4-0 lead. Izturis went 3 for 3 after batting just .125 over his previous 14 games. Craig Tatum’s RBI single in the eighth made it a 5-0 lead.
Losing pitcher Scott Kazmir gave up four runs over 5 2/3 to fall to 8-12, 6.34.
The Orioles are 5-0 vs. Los Angeles on the year after going 2-8 last year vs. the Angels. They are 17-17 this season vs. AL West teams, winning 12 of their last 16 games.
The Birds improved to 15-10 with Buck Showalter as manager.
They are 3-2 on this road trip which ends Sunday afternoon when Jeremy Guthrie (7-13, 4.13) pitches vs. Jared Weaver (11-9, 3.21).
