He pitched on the mound at Camden Yards yesterday and tonight he agreed to a contract with the Orioles.
The Orioles this evening came to terms with a local Baltimore product, 19th-round draft pick Josh Hader, a left-handed pitcher from Old Mill High in Anne Arundel County, MASNsports.com has learned.
The 6-foot-3, 160-lb. Hader had tremendous stats this season, going 10-0 with an ERA of 0.39. and he fanned 125 batters over 72 2/3 innings.
Hader pitched two shutout innings yesterday at Camden Yards, starting for the South All-Stars in the Brooks Robinson All-Star game. He gave up just one hit with three strikeouts.
Hader has a fastball right now that sits between 87 and 89 mph along with a curve, slider and changeup. The Orioles feel he'll fill out more as he adds weight and has nice potential. O's vice president Dan Duquette talked about adding local players like Hader to the organization.
The Orioles have gotten a second local player, signing University of Maryland right-handed pitcher Sander Beck. He was not drafted last week and was signed as a free agent after the draft. The Orioles had selected Beck in round 33 last year but he returned to College Park for his senior season.
Beck is from Severna Park, Md., and attended Severn School. This season with the Terps, he went 6-2 with a 2.87 ERA and 42 strikeouts over 53 1/3 innings. He played the last couple of seasons with the Youse's Orioles amateur club.
Earlier today, I reported that the Orioles are very close to coming to contract terms with these four players that all could wind up with Aberdeen when the IronBirds' season begins a week from today:
* Eighth-round pick Torsten Boss, an outfielder from Michigan State.
* 10th-round pick Joel Hutter, a shortstop from Dallas Baptist.
* 23rd-round pick Gene Escat, a RHP from Fresno State.
* 25th-round pick Alexander "Creede" Simpson, an infielder from Auburn.
O's third-round pick, shortstop Adrian Marin from Miami, has reported his signing with the club on his Twitter page and he is now in Sarasota getting ready to begin play with the O's Gulf Coast League club. Hader will likely join him on that team when its season starts next Monday.
