Wieters homers twice, but O's fall at Toronto

Matt Wieters came up with his first career two-homer game, but the Orioles fell behind 8-0 after five innings and lost 9-5 to Toronto tonight.

The Orioles are now 0-10 on the year vs. the Blue Jays and have been outscored 57 to 21.

The Orioles, who have lost nine games in a row at Rogers Centre, have now lost ten straight to Toronto for the first time since May of 2000.

Wieters, who came off the disabled list Sunday, hit a two-run shot in the 6th and a solo blast in the 8th. He went 2 for 2 with a pair of walks and is now 10 for 24 with five extra-base hits and 6 RBI during a seven-game batting streak.

But Brad Bergesen was hit hard again as he lost for the fifth start in a row. Bergesen allowed 10 hits and 8 runs (all earned) over five innings. He gave up three homers in falling to 3-9, 6.95.

Bergesen is 0-2, 7.68 in three starts this year vs. Toronto.

Luke Scott, today named the latest AL player of the week, continued his hot hitting with a two-run homer. He has homered five times over the last seven games.

In eight games since coming off the DL, Scott is 14 for 31 (.452) with five homers and 10 RBI. He now has an 11-game hitting streak.

Jose Bautista, Adam Lind and Aaron Hill all homered for Toronto which has out-homered the Orioles 21-4 this season.

The O's fall to 13-35 in road games, 10-33 vs. the AL East and 31-68 on the season. This was game one of a seven-game road trip.

Tuesday night at Toronto, it's Kevin Millwood (2-9, 5.84) vs. Ricky Romero (7-7, 3.52).

I thought Wieters was a bust?

In all seriousness, it's good to see him start so well off the DL. I hope he continues to build on tonight and carries a strong end of the season into the start of next season.

Steve, Off topic, I think the Twins need all their bats checked for cork . Minn. 17 KC 0 7TH INN.

Steve-
Listening to the local talk these days, well, a bad bad picture is being painted as to our future.
Buck Martinez and Schmuck talking about how Buck is now the latest to turn down the O's. That, we can't even get a coach. Every single player, who we have put the future of the franchise in their hands, has regressed. We can't sign a free agent. We don't have anyone that is "changer" close to the bigs.

My question is, what do we do if they all bust out? We can't buy 5 starters. I am perplexed as to how poorly this "plan" has gone to date.
I just don't know what to think. Are we really just stuck in a horrible black hole where there is no exit?
Markakis has regressed these last 2 seasons, again, I want him to be the best.
It would be nice if these 2 HR from WEiters was the start of an explosion. If he can hit 350 the rest of the way in and knock in 50 RBI and 15 HR. THat would be something, at least.

Steve,

Any idea what this guy is talking about? Where has anyone said Buck has turned us down? If this isn't true, people like this should probably not be posted.

I have not seen or read anything to the sort. - Steve.

Well Bergesen is clearly not a major league caliber pitcher at the moment. He needs to be sent down and left there till the end of the minor league season to work things out. My idea is to bring up Patton and give him a shot. I know he hasnt blown the doors down at AAA this year but he cant be any worse then Bergesen. Then what Id do is start to stretch Berken out in case Patton flops and give Berken another crack at the rotation. Starting pitching is more important then the bullpen, and he could always go back to the pen

Well, regardless of what is going on, there is a cloudy haze over this organization. As much as a mess as it is, why is this manager search such a confusing thing? Schmuck and Buck asked the question, "why would Buck want to come here? It's a career killer with no light at the end of the tunnel".
Does Pete think he is going to get Showalter for Trembley money? If he thinks they can get the guy they want for less than 3+ million bucks (Trembley, I beleive was at like 800G's), then they are in la-la land. Showalter is going to want control of some things. No more Crowley, he is going to probably want to go with his own Pitching Coach as well. Its not like Kranitz has done an amazing job getting these kids to learn HOW to pitch. How many 0-1 and 0-2 counts did Arrieta get smacked around on yesterday? Who's calling that? Belt high change-up that gave up the grand slam the dude was just sitting on waiting like he was at the dentist office.
The only thing this front office has left is honesty, and everything is so convoluted, they just can't do it. They just want the 100's of fans that are left to fall right in line and keep drinking the kool-aid.
Buck hasn't signed. I would bet he doesn't.

Morning Steve,

I love Juan's demeanor. He seems pissed and I love it. He shoots it straight and says it the way it is. Very refreshing. He's not afraid to call out a player or point out deficiencies/mistakes.

So what is the vibe in the clubhouse/front office? I would love to see him get a chance to finish out the season as the skipper. Do you think he has any shot at the job for next season? Everyone keeps talking Buck, Buck, Buck. I think Juan deserves consideration. What say you?

As has been said, his job interview is his daily running of the team. It is giving him a chance to show all of baseball what he can do. He is playing to some good reviews, but I still don't expect him to get the O's job and think the odds are still much better that it is someone else whether it is this year or in the off-season. - Steve.
