Last year's Orioles first-round draft pick, right-hander Matt Hobgood, will make his next start this coming Monday for the Delmarva Shorebirds.
Hobgood has been out since June 11 with shoulder soreness. The injury is not serious but since he has missed some time, Hobgood will be on a pitch count and his innings will be limited in that first start back.
The 19-year-old is 3-6, 4.48 in 12 starts for Delmarva. Over 64 1/3 innings, he has allowed 63 hits with 30 walks, 42 strikeouts and a .261 batting average against.
He gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in five innings in his last start on June 11 vs. Lexington.
Hobgood by month:
April: 1-1, 4.57 in four starts
May: 2-3, 4.70 in six starts
June: 0-2, 3.75 in two starts
Meanwhile, another first-round pick, Brandon Snyder, who has not played for Norfolk since June 17, should return around or just after the All-Star break, which comes July 12 at Triple-A, the same time as it does in the Majors.
Snyder, who is out with a lower back injury, is batting .255-5-28 for the Tides. In 15 games in June, he was batting .327-3-8 with an OPS of .920.
Meanwhile, I'm told that Nate Moreau threw exactly 100 pitches in his no-hitter last night for Frederick.
He was well within his pitch count limit so there was reportedly no discussion on the Frederick bench about taking him out in the later innings. He pitched the sixth no-hitter in Keys history and did it on his first day with the team.
What made it even more impressive was the fact he had to take two flights yesterday to get from Charleston, West Virgina, where he was with Delmarva, to reach Roanoke, Virginia and join the Keys for the game at Salem.
He got to the Frederick hotel at one or two in the afternoon, then got on the bus for the park around 3:30 and then went out and pitched a gem and produced a night he'll never forget.
