Chico back to Harrisburg

Matt Chico’s spot start on Saturday was apparently nothing more than that. The Nationals told the left-hander after the game that they were sending him back to Double-A Harrisburg, he said.

Chico pitched five innings on Saturday, giving up two runs on six hits and taking a no-decision in the Nationals’ 5-4 win over the Marlins. But the Nationals figured they only needed him for today with John Lannan still looking likely to come back on Thursday, so they sent him back to the minors.

Chico, who hadn’t pitched in the majors in almost two years after Tommy John surgery, said he figured it was a “95 percent chance” he’d go back to the minors after his start on Saturday.

“Hopefully Lannan comes back strong,” Chico said, “and hopefully sometime down the road, I can possibly get in the rotation.”

Washington now has an open roster spot, and it’s conceivable they’ll use it to bring up another reliever tomorrow.
