Monday’s Nats vs. Mets in-game thread

Welcome to MASN’s live thread for tonight’s Nationals-Mets game at Citi Field. I’ll have updates and analysis throughout the game, and whether you’re just watching the game on TV or following online, you can participate by commenting in this thread. Or, if you’re on Twitter, you can tag tweets with #masnnats, and they’ll be included in the chat.

If you want to participate in the chat via our Gamezone space, which includes live stats, matchup data, pitch tracking and more, head here. And if you’re not into the game chat experience, that’s fine, too - I’ll provide some periodic updates below the chat window.

Thru 3: Both Luis Atilano and John Maine are struggling to throw strikes - each one has thrown more than 60 pitches in the first three innings. But Atilano has at least settled down after a rough first inning, having retired six of his last seven. And the Nationals have a 2-0 lead on account of back-to-back homers from Adam Kennedy and Ryan Zimmerman. Kennedy has been very solid at the plate lately; he walked and stole a base on a double steal with Nyjer Morgan in the first inning. If he can solidify the No. 2 spot and the Nationals can keep Ian Desmond low in the order, it extends the lineup nicely. But Atilano will need a couple quick innings to keep the Nationals from having to get into their bullpen too soon.

Thru 6 1/2: Atilano did a nice job in the middle innings, getting some quick ground balls, and gave way to Doug Slaten in the bottom of the sixth. On the left-hander’s first at-bat, he got Ike Davis to line one to third, and Ryan Zimmerman made a spectacular running catch-and-throw to first to double off David Wright. The Nationals haven’t been able to add any more on John Maine, despite getting two hits and an intentional walk off him in the sixth. Pudge Rodriguez was thrown out at the plate with two outs, and the Nationals’ chance at adding on went away. So it’s still 2-0 in the seventh.
